Speaking on the 100th anniversary of the Sykes-Picot Agreement last week, President of the Iraqi Kurdistan, Masoud Barzani, declared that the old Middle East created by European imperialism was dead and that an independent Kurdish state must be part of the emerging new order.
Referring to the secret arrangement by the Allied Powers in World War I to divide the Middle East into spheres of influence, Barzani blasted the Sykes-Picot Agreement, saying that it denied the rights of the inhabitants and carved up populations with arbitrary lines. The agreement served as the basis for the establishment of the modern states of Syrian, Iraq, Lebanon, and Jordan.
Today marks the 100th anniversary of the Sykes-Picot agreement. This agreement led to the carving up of the region following the First World War, disregarding the opinion of the peoples of the region and of the geographical reality in the region. It was a great injustice on the peoples of the region, especially the Kurds.
"The consequences of this agreement were first and foremost detrimental to the people of Kurdistan in the state of Iraq. An Iraqi state that was originally established to be based on partnership between Kurds and Arabs, in fact decided to marginalize the Kurds. Successive Iraqi regimes have since denied Kurds their rights and have committed great tragedies against the Kurdish people.
While the divisions established in the Sykes-Picot Agreement have held for a century, Barzani claims that the new reality of Islamic terrorism has effectively rendered the boundaries of states like Syria and Iraq null and void.

Declare it and defend it.
Only an idiot (or a muslim) would think it's a good idea to hand over Christian land and property to an islamic Kurdish state.
And what Christian land and property would be handed over to Kurdistan? Your point is not valid. You live in the US. If you own a house there, is it the property of the state or federal government? Is Kurdistan presently in a Christian state?
There are both Christians and Jews living in Kurdistan. Both of their lingua franca is Aramaic, and the Kurds are not, as far as I know, interested in persecuting them.
The important point that you are missing, is that if Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey are partitioned to make a Greater Kurdistan, it would take important assets such as oil, arable land and fresh water away from Erdogan, Iran, Assad, Iraq and ISIS. If they predictably refuse to be partitioned, that can be used to resist the pressure on Israel to partition for the sake of the Palis.
It is win-win, and Christians would be at worst still living in the ME and not anymore harmed as Kurdish citizens than they would have been remaining Turkish, Iranian, Iraqi, Syrian or ISIS dhimmis, perhaps even helped, if Israel, the Vatican, and President Trump have anything to say about it. The UN and EU can of course be counted on to not be counted on.
History says otherwise.
You have to go back 100 years to find an instance? Germany misbehaved a good deal more recently, yet there was rejoicing when the Berlin Wall fell, despite Tom Lehrer’s dire warnings. What exactly is your meaning, anyway. We are not talking about giving anything that belongs to a Christian to Moslems. Have you noticed, all the countries that would be partitioned to midwife Greater Kurdistan ARE Moslem! And they have their own abismal record with regards to both Christians AND Jews. They deserve to be partitioned. Divide and conquer works.
The Kurds came to Iraq/Syria from Iran or Afghanistan or wherever they came from, helped murder about 200,000 Christians (at least), and now claim this is their land and their property, and all the peoples in the region are going to live under the heel of an Kurdish islamic terrorist state. Well I have a better idea. Let them go carve out an islamic terrorist state of Kurdistan from parts of Iran or Afghanistan. Maybe a bit of Turkey too. Leave the rest of us, who don't want to live in a Kurdish islamic terrorist state, alone.
You do not live in Kurdistan. This is totally bogus. You are not going to live under the heels of any Islamic state within the foreseeable future, and in fact the heels of ISIS, Assad and the Iranian Mullahs, not to mention Turkey, is much more oppressive. Yes, the Kurds are Islamic. But the aforementioned murder of 200,000 Christians occurred hundreds of years ago, and was also committed mainly by Arabs.
You are ignoring the present to avenge the remote past and—what? evict all the Kurds from Iraq and Syria? And in furtherance of that dubious goal, you are in favor of leaving the most outrageously murderous regimes in place, so as to prevent the present-day Kurds (who are by all accounts something better than their neighbors to the South) from taking the same territory that is now under the heel of Arabs, off their hands, leaving all the oil and other resources in the hands of ISIS, Assad, etc.
You are advancing phony arguments, and I wonder if your agenda is something other than kosher.
It happened 90 years ago and was committed by Kurds and Turks.
I have a better idea. Give the Assyrian Christians their own state. Build it from so-called "Kurdistan". The Kurds can live peacefully as citizens of an Assyrian state.
The Germans were de-nazified and today it is difficult to find anyone that supports Naziism in Germany. Ultimately the Germans could be reasoned with and trusted. The Kurds, however, have never been de-moslemized and they still support terrorism. The Germans also paid a lot of restitution to their victims, Something the Kurds are unlikely to ever get around to doing.
And they prove they’re terrorists every day by fighting ISIS. I don’t claim that the Kurds are model world citizens. But they are a wedge between the crazed Shiites and the crazed Wahhabists. They are not terrorists for the most part, and are not big supporters of terrorists. You are looking for a perfect world, and will settle for nothing less. I am for perfecting the one we have, and in it, I’d rather have Kurds grabbing big chunks of Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria, than have those countries keep Kurdistan divided between them. The old, pre-Isis order was one created by Laurentine pan-Arabists. I’d rather have the Middle East reflect true multiculturalism, a sometimes-gorgeous mosaic of formerly suppressed Eastern Minorities, one in which my people have a prominent but not exclusive place of honor.
