I read a short sci fi novel 30 or so years ago and the plot was about how the Russians had come up with a way (drug? .. I forget) to induce a never ending desire to train and work out

I forget the outcome, but I remember the basic plot line and I've often wondered about people that are just so obsessed with "achievement"

I got to where I wanted to be in life and retired
