Talk-radio event airs ‘disruption’
The Boston Herald ^ | 05/21/2016 | Tom Shattuck

Virtually every prominent mover and shaker in talk radio gathered at Hofstra University on Long Island, N.Y., yesterday for the “Talkers 2016: Bridging the Generations” conference.

On stage, radio hosts and industry experts spoke of the “disruption” in the industry — the challenges and opportunities brought on by the technical innovation sweeping every facet of communications.

In the halls, I asked a few famous talkers about the astounding “disruption” of this year’s presidential election, in which modern politics has been turned on its head.

I remember those liner notes from that album. I miss the old LP cover art and liner notes.

These things go in cycles.

Radio will thrive again, but only once the huge conglomerates that have gobbled up every local station, removed all the local color, and turned it into a bland homogenized wasteland go bankrupt.

iHeart is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy right now. Let’s hope that once it collapses all of its local stations will return to being independent.

And while I haven’t heard any rumors I hope that the GOPe propaganda mill that is Salem radio won’t be far behind. Hewitt, Medved and Levin with their non-stop #neverTrump can’t have that big of an audience at this point.

Hey, don’t pick on America’s favorite chubby Valley Girl.

She’s representing every 30 year old female who talks and thinks like a 16 yr old ditz. It’s cheap entertainment if you listen to her in the right frame of mind. Beer sometimes helps.

With 50,000 watts clear channel, WABC could (and still can) be heard as far away as Florida, Illinois, and up into Canada.

“Talk Radio was critical to the conservative movement in the 80s.”

In the 80s?

In LA we had only George Putnam on tiny KIEV, and Ray Briem doing the night shift on KABC.

The prime morning slot in LA was held down by the British inflected voice of the Hollywood Left, Michael Jackson (not the singer).

Other than that in this major market there was no conservative radio. We were relegated to the hinterlands.

Conservative radio back them was still at the movement stage and was small. Hucksters in it primarily for personal gain and big profit had yet to arrive.

“Loose,” as apposed to “lose,” appears so frequently here at FR that I thought for a while it was being used intentionally like “hugh” and “series.” Speaking of which, I would be happy to “loose” those two hackneyed terms as well.

“I can remember when younger, listening to the latest hits and favorite DJs on Top 40 and rock and roll stations. Today’s young people just don’t do this. Many stations don’t even have DJs anymore.”

The Sprouts market in Yorba Linda always plays ‘Boomer era music. I tease the teenage checkers about this, but they say that they would hate to work in the store of it played the music being foisted on their own generation. They love ‘Boomer music. They think that there is some good music being made right now but it’s hard to find.

One reason I suppose is that there simply aren’t any radio stations with a Top 40 format. And the other is that although there was plenty of crap music being made in the ‘Boomer years, this current era seems to be more crap than nuggets.

I remember listening to WABC at night in the mid-1970s. In the early to mid 2000s, I’d try to tune in Sunday nights for Drudge Radio. At least his local NYC 1/2hr pre-show.

Never conservative on AM radio until Rush.

Mostly talk radio general stuff before, oldies music, religious stations, and Mexican music on the rest. Rush was my first exposure to real conservative talk radio.

I quit listening because of the annoying advertising. Seems like there may be 60% substance and 40% ads. No mas.
