“The Secret Service prevented attendees from bringing in knives and guns — ordinarily commonplace accessories at the convention — into the hall where Mr. Trump was speaking, prompting some grumbling.”

I’m curious why the Secret Sevice did that?

They did that when Ronald Regan spoke at the NRA annual meeting. They do it whenever there is a president speaking, no one except the secret service and the local law enforcement chaps working the event and cleared by the secret service are allowed to be armed.

I seem to recall there was a big deal made when president Obama visited some government lab and went up in an elevator with an armed guard (plainclothes)at the facility who had not been cleared by the secret service. A big stink was made and the guard, who was black ended up losing his job, even though he was doing what he was told.

No way the NRA should let anyone in armed to such an event. Can you see how damaging it would be if something happened to the candidate at such an event. Goodbye gun rights...
