May 20, 2016, 05:11 pm Obama signs measure striking 'oriental' and 'negro' from federal law

By Jordan Fabian

President Obama has signed legislation striking outdated racial terms such as “Oriental” and “Negro” from federal laws.

Obama signed the bill without fanfare on Friday along with six other pieces of legislation, the White House said.

The measure sailed through Congress unopposed, a rare example of bipartisan agreement in an election year. It reached the president’s desk after the Senate unanimously approved it on Monday. It passed the House easily in February.

“The term ‘Oriental’ has no place in federal law and at long last this insulting and outdated term will be gone for good,” the author of the bill, Rep. Grace Meng (D-N.Y.), said in a statement Friday.

Two sections in the U.S. Code written in the 1970s governing public health and civil rights attempted to define minority groups by using the outdated terms.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. Modernization of terms relating to minorities.

(a) Office of minority economic impact.—Section 211(f)(1) of the Department of Energy Organization Act (42 U.S.C. 7141(f)(1)) is amended by striking “a Negro, Puerto Rican, American Indian, Eskimo, Oriental, or Aleut or is a Spanish speaking individual of Spanish descent” and inserting “Asian American, Native Hawaiian, a Pacific Islander, African American, Hispanic, Puerto Rican, Native American, or an Alaska Native”.

(b) Minority business enterprises.—Section 106(f)(2) of the Local Public Works Capital Development and Investment Act of 1976 (42 U.S.C. 6705(f)(2)) is amended by striking “Negroes, Spanish-speaking, Orientals, Indians, Eskimos, and Aleuts” and inserting “Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islanders, African American, Hispanic, Native American, or Alaska Natives”.

What is so racist about Oriental? It just means Eastern. Westerners were often also called Occidental. Does anyone understand language anymore?

When and why is “Oriental” an insult? Do we no longer refer to the part of the world they come from as the Orient?

I remember when blacks called themselves Negros and calling then black was an insult.

The world gone mad.

A or two ago I saw an Asian woman reference herself as being Oriental.

Frankly, I think it’s a compliment, but then in this day and age folks are so tweaked...

My favorite Chinese restaurant has the word Oriental in its name. It’s been run for many years by an Asian family who rarely raise their prices and are always friendly. If some unsuspecting liberal comes in and asks them about the name the owner will ask, “Why do you think oriental is a bad word? It is a good word! We have used the name since before you were born! What is wrong with you?”

Thank God Congress is doing the Important work that needs to be done for America.

The more the brown clown preoccupies himself with this stuff, the less time there is for other destructive actions.

Since when has the word Oriental been insulting?

when my daughter was in college 10 years ago, she advised me that "oriental" describes a carpet. That was the first time I heard of this

so I said white defines an absence of color or a total amount of all colors, depending whether you are talking to a photographer or physicist. There was a long pause then the sound of crickets.
