Federal Judge in Texas Demands Justice Dept. Lawyers Take Ethics Class (over immigration case)
New York Times ^ | May 19, 2016 | MICHAEL D. SHEAR

A federal judge in Texas on Thursday excoriated the Justice Department, demanding ethics classes for the department’s lawyers and ordering other sanctions for those who argued the case involving President Obama’s immigration executive actions.

He also ordered the government to produce a list of about 100,000 immigrants who entered illegally and who are participating in a government program that protects them from deportation.

In a blistering order, Judge Andrew S. Hanen of Federal District Court in Brownsville accused the Justice Department lawyers of lying to him during arguments in the case, and he barred them from appearing in his courtroom.

He also demanded that Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch provide a “comprehensive plan” within 60 days describing how she will prevent unethical conduct in the future, as well as making sure the department’s Office of Professional Responsibility effectively prevents misconduct among its lawyers.

He also said that any Justice Department lawyer who wants to appear in a state or federal court in any of the 26 states who filed suit to block Mr. Obama’s executive actions should be required to take an annual three-hour ethics course for the next five years.

“Clearly, there seems to be a lack of knowledge about or adherence to the duties of professional responsibility in the halls of the Justice Department,” Judge Hanen wrote in the 28-page order.

A spokesman for the Justice Department said Thursday that “we strongly disagree with the order” but declined to comment further.

Judge Hanen is at the center of the bitter legal fight over the fate of the immigration executive actions Mr. Obama announced at the end of 2014. Texas and 25 other states sued the president, objecting to his efforts to prevent millions of illegal immigrants from being deported and allow them to work in the country legally.

Take an ethics class? Really? Hey judge, how about slapping contempt of court citations on those lawyers instead, then throw them in a cell for a day or three.

That would be a better behavior modifier.

How about disbarrment? Lawyers already have required Ethics Classes. If they didn’t learn them the first time, they sure won’t try now. Kicking the can down the road. Lynch should be held responsible along with Holder. Does anyone think anything will happen to Hillary? Same DOJ.

Actually he dd worse than disbar them, he humiliated them. Disbarment would be seen as a partisan move. Lawyers everywhere are laughing.

As always, nothing will happen. They are already got what they wanted so it means nothing to take a few classes.

It reminds me of when the DOJ “convicted” the elder Senator from Alaska right before a crucial election but the evidence was faked so he was exonerated....after he lost the election.

They already are schooled in ethics, which they have long ago chosen to ignore. It is way past time for serious contempt proceedings and disbarment action to commence. They have been and continue to play the courts. It is a hallmark of Zero’s administration. Add politically sympathetic judges to the picture who just go through the motions for show purposes by slapping the wrists of smart aleck lawyers.

Judge Hanen imposes the “rule of law” upon the Justice Department. I REALLY like this judge!

(nota bene: my wife has land-grant kin in Brownsville)

The Court does not have the power to disbar the counsel in this case, but it does have the power to revoke the pro hac vice status of out-of-state lawyers who act unethically in court. By a separate sealed order that it is simultaneously issuing, that is being done.

Ethics are relative to current society, i.e. political correctness, “situational ethics”. What ALL lawyers and JUDGES need is to be well versed in The Constitution.

“Ethics” are distorted by political correctness, which is FAR from moral.

A real judge would have fined or jailed them.

They better have that list of illegal aliens by the 10th of June or there will be some jail. The funny thing is they can’t appear? The Justice Department has totally discredited itself as mere obama thugs. It is a sad day in America.

Ethics requires a standard to compare behavior to. What would that standard be?
