TSA's Union Power Grab: Thousands Slowing Down Airports

Michelle Malkin

All you travelers stuck in mile-long TSA security lines are pawns. Convenient political pawns. Big Labor bosses want more power and more money. Stranded travelers are just the latest victims in this age-old game of D.C. extortion.

Union leaders want you to think the fault lies with a stingy Congress unwilling to fork over enough money to fill screener shortages. White House spokesman Josh Earnest poured more partisan fuel on the fire last week by blaming the nationwide slowdowns on "the inability of Republicans in Congress to govern the country."

What a load of flying horse hockey.

The 15-year-old Transportation Security Administration now has a massive annual budget of nearly $7.6 billion and a workforce of nearly 60,000. They had enough tax dollars to waste on an idiotic $1.4 million iPad app that randomly points left or right; $3 million on more than 200 useless explosive detection "puffer" machines that didn't detect explosives reliably; and unknown gobs in awards and automatic bonuses to senior TSA managers at a time when the agency was repeatedly failing internal tests of its ability to stop weapons, bombs and terror threats.

Yet, last week, with airlines, airports and customers all raising holy hell, Congress scraped together $34 million more to pay TSA screeners overtime and fund nearly 800 more screeners to address the summer travel crush.

It's still not enough of course. It's never enough. Since last fall, the TSA workforce (unionized under the Obama administration) has staged protests at major airports (including Dallas-Fort Worth, JFK, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis?St. Paul and Atlanta) organized by the American Federation of Government Employees, which is demanding full collective bargaining rights under federal labor law, along with hefty pay increases.

“I travel a lot. International domestic. US airports ARE THE WORST IN THE WORLD!!! Absolutely the worst.”

Interesting.

Just curious-—Japan’s orderly, crime free conduct after the tsunami was wonderful-—are the airports are also efficient?

Goldfinger knew gold but nothing about gun play in a plane.

That's actually all but impossible. It takes a VERY large hole in the airplane (like the one created with a bomb) to experience "explosive decompression" -- i.e. decompression that happens so fast that you are sucked out.

A bullet will only punch a hole in a window -- it won't shatter. Even losing a window is only going to make a lot of noise. Depending on the size of the plane and the window, the pressurization system can still maintain a low enough cabin altitude to breath normally.

Debunking "The Goldfinger Myth"

The problem with a bullet isn't punching a hole in the cabin wall. It's punching a hole in something vital like a fuel tank (yes, those are very close to you, especially in a small plane), or an oil line (again, very close). Or, you can compromise a control linkage: in a plane without fly-by-wire, the control cables to the rudder and elevator run right under your feet.

However, when faced with a terrorist, I'd take my chances. There are also frangible bullets that dissipate all their energy on impact, making them less risky on an aircraft. But, I doubt the pilot would check your load-out -- he would just do like every gun show does: show it empty and locked open.

Oh, you are so right.

I always got the aisle seat, that way I only had one person on one side, to contend with.

With all the delays and the crowding, I don;t how folks do it anymore.

It is like being on a city bus in the sky.

My last flight of any kind was June 2004 to Paris for the 45th Anniversary of D-Day.

I will not consider flying for travel less than 1000 driving miles. That is rapidly increasing to 1500 miles. So I would rather drive 3000 miles round trip with 2 overnight hotel stays, than face the TSA Nazis. If airlines want me to fly routinely again, they better privatize security at both airports I need, and show me they are not searching old ladies and crippled children and toddlers diapers.

Guns and bombs are the real problem. Everything else is a virtual non-issue.

Damn the TSA to hell.

W was wrong to create TSA. Anybody with a brain could see it would become a useless, wasteful bureaucratic nightmare. I was screaming at W when I learned he was creating the TSA.

TSA was all about making baggage handlers into government union, glorified “security” “officers” .

That’s right; more pseudo-economy. The left’s goal is to have complete government control of the economy, and they are slowly making it so. Just a look at the size of the government workforce, coupled with those employed at government contractors, makes this clear.

I do not agree. The CFR will continue to install their guys as US presidents until the American economy and culture are destroyed. This did not begin with Obama. Jimmy Carter started it along for the CFR. Bill Clinton moved it forward. Just Obama has been the most successful, but even both Bush presidents were all in for the new world order and a weak America. After Obama is gone, they will just install somebody else. If Trump wins, he may slow them down a little if he does not end up CFR himself, which is certainly possible. But no, this doesn’t end with Obama. The parade of presidents installed by the UN and CFR to implement UN Agenda 21 and worse, will continue unabated. Our destruction is now baked into the cake. There is no stopping it.

While that is true, it is also about conditioning the public to giving up their freedom for perceived security. It is about government control and getting people used to the idea of surrendering their Constitutional rights and freedoms “for a good reason”.
