Massive protest at BP Whiting refinery near Chicago

Today, more than 1,000 residents and 70 partner organizations from around the Midwest region protested at BP Whiting Refinery, demanding that hazardous fossil fuels stay in the ground and that the Midwest Region accelerate a just transition to 100% renewable energy.

After marching two miles amid the stench of tar and sulphur permeating nearby neighborhoods, 41 of the protesters sat in a circle outside BP’s gates and were arrested by police in riot gear, and released shortly after. This was one of largest mass arrests related to environmental issues and extractive fossil fuel industries in Indiana’s history.

This escalated action took place in coordination with peaceful mobilizations across six continents under the global platform Break Free, in which ordinary people targeted prominent fossil fuels projects in the name of climate justice.

BP Whiting Refinery, which has the capacity to process more than 400,000 barrels per day of crude oil, has a history of putting profits before people. From piling up petroleum waste that pollutes the air of nearby residents, to the 2014 spill of more than 1,600 gallons of oil and tar sands into Lake Michigan – the surrounding region’s source of drinking water – the devastation inflicted by the refinery is felt throughout the Midwest. Enbridge pipelines, which transport tar sands from Alberta, Canada, through Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois to the BP Whiting Refinery, have torn through indigenous lands and in 2010, spilled more than 800,000 gallons of oil and tar sands into Michigan’s Kalamazoo River - the largest inland oil spill in the U.S.

Solution. Quit selling gasoline in the midwest. Everyone should be happy.

A survey a few years ago showed that a substantial number of Californians believed that electricity comes from “power points”.

” After marching two miles”

Anyone care to wager whether 100% of these bozos arrived at the two mile drop-off point via transportation 100% fired by “hazardous” fossil fuels that no longer remained in the ground?

And these are the same asshats that will protest the refinery when they jack the price back up to $4.00 a gallon. Of course, these are most likely paid professional “protester” types that get bussed from gig to gig anyhow, so they aren't concerned about fuel costs.

That’s so sad, yet funny. Wonder if that would be Power Points available through Microsoft.

With all the info available on the net I never cease to be amazed at what people don’t know, things that are pretty common in my life experiences. For instance, where does milk come from? Ask people in a large eastern city and they will tell you from the grocery store because they have never seen a cow. And no, cows do not give chocolate milk.

I see some potential here for a huge prank. The company could quietly subcontract so that when the protesters arrived, another group, wearing chemical protective suits and masks also shows up.

They set up a field shower tent and washing machines, then one of their spokesmen, with a megaphone, makes an announcement to the protesters.

“Because of an accidental release of some toxic chemical agent from a truck upwind of this location, we believe that you all might have been contaminated. Please do not leave this area until you have been decontaminated in our showers and your clothing washed to insure that you do not take contamination with you as you leave that could injure you or others. If you feel any itching sensation or irritable eyes or coughing, please move to the head of the line.”

Then, if they are willing, give them showers in cold water and wash their clothing in strong bleach water. And give them rough wool blankets to huddle under until their clothing is done.

Depending on how many suckers they get, then they pack up and leave, leaving no trace behind or indication of who they were.
