Think the author slipped up there. He was probably trying to convey a sense that the supporters are naive, and accidentally broke from the “angry old white males” label typically used.

Totally agree, I did a double take and triple take. My guess is he wanted us to imagine neo-nazi soccer hoodlums with shaved heads - that kind of young-conservative.
