At least two Chinese J-11 tactical aircraft carried out an "unsafe" intercept of a United States EP-3 reconnaissance aircraft that was conducting a routine mission in international airspace over the South China Sea, a U.S. defense official told CNN Wednesday.
The Chinese jets came within 50 feet of the American aircraft at one point, the official said.

And if the US aircraft was flying with the transponder off the same way the US planes intercepted over the Baltic were flying with it off the US would be guilty under international law as well as according to several treaties of an unprovoked attack.
When aircraft fly with their transponders off they're asking for trouble one way or another. It was done a lot during the Cold War to test what sort of responses the target country had and to get the target country to use additional types of radars to track the aircraft.
Now? It makes for good copy and helps the beat the big panic and evil empire drum to keep people from noticing that we've turned a major portion of the Middle East into an Islamic anarchy that's breeding terrorists and driving several million refugees into Europe which plays right into the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood and their long range plans.
During ‘68, 69 and 70, I was flying on C 121’s and P-3’s out of DaNang doing voice intercept for the Navy. We typically had a fighter CAP at the ready.
What the hell has happened? Is it simply a function of who is the President?
