Navy Secretary Ray Mabus says in a letter that he has the power to name warships as he chooses, in response to a former Marine and congressman who charges he has politicized the process.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, California Republican and House Armed Services Committee member, wrote Mr. Mabus to question the naming of an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer after former Sen. Carl Levin, Michigan Democrat and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

I do too.

Duncan Hunter Jr. is a straight shooter and a solid supporter of the military being he’s a former Marine, he’s following in his Dad’s footsteps.

Then President Trump should decommission it and recommission it the ‘USS Sarah Palin’.

I hope Ray retires soon. I’m sure some boys could invite him to a keel hauling party. Navy tradition and all.

Well considering that “Caitlyn” is a Republican, don’t count on it.

It’s a broader problem, Congress likes to name buildings and legislation after themselves as well. Pork is easier to swallow when coated by ego. I would like to see a simple Constitutional amendment like this:

No vessel, building, installation, facility, real property, or legislation of the United States or the several states shall be named after any individual person or group of persons alive or who has not been deceased for at least five years at the time named. This shall not apply to individuals who die in the service of the United States or of the several states.

Acts of the Congress of the United States shall be clearly and plainly named for the actual subject of the act, and no act of the Congress shall discuss more than one subject.

Thoughts?

Mr. Mabus said this class hereafter will be named after civil rights and human rights activists.

Sounds like Mabus plans on being Secretary Of The Navy for quite a long time.

What dastardly plans does Obama have for the country that would make Mabus think that he will survive the swearing in of the next president?

It can only be one of two things:

He knows that Obama doesn't plan on leaving the White House next January.

Or

He knows the fix is in to hand the presidency to Hillary.

I think it's inappropriate to name warships (or much of anything else for that matter) after folks who are still alive.

Agreed. In the case of treasonous RATs, put them on trial, convict them and execute the sons o' bitches, then we'll consider whether or not they are worthy to have their name on a United States Navy vessel.

(and the answer will probably still be 'NO')

The lying idiot is nuts if he thinks he can proclaim that no matter what he thinks he knows. I don’t believe either will happen, especially your first one, bambam’s already overstayed his welcome.

Devils advocate again

How many of you actually believe that the R’s were going to get away with naming 3 CVN after 3 former R Presidents?

Sorry, but NO ONE should be in a position to make a live appearance at the christening of a ship named after him/her. PERIOD.

These Liberal may be corrupt, evil, back stabbing - which, by the way, makes them good pols— but one must remember ‘pay backs are hell’ and they are good at it.

Imagine someone making a statement like Rabus did with a Tip O’Neil or Sam Rayburn as SOH, like them or not either would probably have the Secty in the ‘looking for work’ line for such an outlandish statement.?

Reminiscent of Al Haig and his ‘As of Now I am in control’ comment after Reagan shooting.

Most of us (Military minded) figured he was saying he was ‘on scene commander’ till the pieces got sorted out but he got accused of saying he was Prez (sometimes I wonder)

It’s not unheard of for a ship to be renamed during construction. Happened many times during WW2 when a name became ‘available’ after a sinking. But after a ship has been christened? I’m not aware of an example.

Renaming a ship that has already been named is considered bad luck. But it has been done many times from the 1940s onward to the present day. I don’t know of any that suffered any particular bad luck from being renamed.
