Mitt Romney has ruled out an independent bid for president, and is not actively recruiting any more potential candidates to do so at the moment, though he remains hopeful someone will emerge, allies told Yahoo News Tuesday.
Romney feels like America hangs in the balance. Hes very distraught about [Trump], said one Romney adviser. He thinks Trump is this vulgar, dangerous, principle-less, value-less opportunist putting it mildly.
The 2012 Republican nominee for president has been the most outspoken GOP figure continuing to steadfastly oppose Trump. Romney has been asked to consider running for president himself, but did not seriously consider it, those who know him said. But he remains alarmed at the prospect of a Trump candidacy, even as hope appears to be fading that any alternative can be found.

Everything you do has shown that you are a stooge for the Democrats, whether you are aware of it or not.

Oh, he’s well aware of it.
I think it’s mostly that professional Republicans aren’t very conservative and pretty much just read the script in order to get votes. It’s business as usual, and business is pretty good.
Trump represents a real break from that mindset. A Trump victory means that the usual professional conservatives aren’t on speed dial and the channels of access will either be closed or far more limited than they are used to.
On the night Jeb threw in the towel, Dana Perino was almost in tears. That’s a pretty big emotional investment. I suppose people like her like the access and the chance at another eight year run in DC.
That’s a good example of the dynamic at work. A lot of nominal conservatives see the ascendancy of Trump as the slow motion destruction of their meal ticket. For me, that’s a good thing. For the typical GOP hack who needs to put three kids through college it’s alarming.
Romney has no money problems. But guys like him are being marginalized. Again, I see it as a good thing. Professional conservatives likely see it as a severe undermining of the status quo they have relied on for years.
