Clark was one of the legends of songwriting. I followed him for quite a while. I especially liked Heartbroke and Randall Knife. RIP Mr. Clark.
Funny you mention Hearbroke. I saw Guy Clark at Yoshi's in Oakland maybe ten years ago. He came out played a song or two then stood there for a moment, then said:
'Hell, I don't have a list, what do you want a hear?"
Someone said 'Texas 1947' and he played it.
I asked: "How's old Flint's boat?" He laughed and played Rita Ballou.
Some one asked for "Heartbroke" and he tuned his guitar a bit then said:
"I think I'll decline on that one. I don't play it much since that guy did it a few years ago. (he hesitated on the word "did"). He then continued: "But I sure did like cashing those checks"
