Electric cars are great for eliminating oil from transportation, because very little U.S. electricity is generated by burning petroleum. But electric cars may or may not help the country combat climate change—and it all depends on where the electricity comes from.

Nothing can help combat something that doesn't exist.
They are cheap to build and maintain, especially in the Midwest...lot of hills there, if a bump in the road is considered a "hill."

Coal powered cars just doesn’t sound as eco-friendly as cars that are magically powered by electricity from fairy dust and unicorn farts.

Energy is energy. Something has to get hot to produce the electricity. And that produces by-products of the process.

Regarding how power is generated, let’s take a look at rainy Oregon. Since Oregon relies on hydroelectric power for much of its electric power needs, consider the following.
Given that rain is the product of solar activity, it can be argued that electric vehicles used in Oregon are solar powered. This is ironic since northwestern states are known for being overcast.

Seriously though, is there really a serious number of people who don’t know that the electricity for an electric car comes typically from fossil fuels?
They used to be “cheap to build and maintain”.
Now the EPA and environmental groups make it virtually impossible to site a new power dam.
And the US government is systematically working to dismantle existing dams in the name of the environment.
Hydro is as clean a power as you can get. Next is hydrothermal but the available sites are very few. Then comes Nuclear and the enviro-wackos are against that too.
They won’t be happy until we all are sitting in the dark and shivering in the cold.

Most Americans are products of public schooling. 'Nuff said.
Some parts and Assemblies would have to be lubricated on an electric car. Hence, you would have to use some kind of Petroleum product.
When we first started to hear about electric cars to combat CO2, here and other places, someone ALWAYS said, “Why have a car that runs on coal?” Now, after years go by, Scientific American finally says “It depends on how the electricity is generated”, as to how ‘clean’ your electric car is. So glad those guys finally caught up.
And the manufacturing of the car, and all it's parts, takes oil to lubricate the machines that makes them. Then, there's the oil and gas used to transport the 'clean' car to it's point of sale location...etc.
There really are a serious number of people who don’t think beyond whatever is fashionable and trendy. They choose to believe whatever propaganda is pushed by the currently PC crowd, for fear of being left out of the cool club.
