A new lawsuit accuses Goya Foods Inc of cheating consumers by selling canned octopus products that actually contain cheaper, lower quality jumbo squid. "Independent DNA testing" confirmed that the largest Hispanic-owned U.S. food company made the switch, according to a complaint filed late Wednesday in the federal court in San Jose, California. The lawsuit seeks at least $5 million of damages. Goya, based in Jersey City, New Jersey, did not immediately respond on Thursday to requests for comment. The plaintiff Luis Diego Zapata Fonseca, of Salinas, California, sued on behalf of purchasers nationwide and in California of Goya canned octopus in garlic sauce, hot sauce, pickled sauce or olive oil. According to the complaint, both fish have similar textures, making it hard for people to tell them apart, especially when they are bathed in sauce. But while octopus prices have risen because of overfishing, jumbo squid are thriving, and they adapt easily to changing ocean conditions caused by global warming, the complaint said. The plaintiff believes Goya "intentionally replaced the octopus in its octopus products with squid as a cheap substitute to save money because it knew an ordinary consumer would have trouble distinguishing the difference," the complaint said. The lawsuit was filed by Bursor & Fisher, a specialist in false labeling lawsuits. It did not immediately respond on Thursday to requests for comment.

Si es Goya, tiene que ser calamar.
There’s something about that title that just makes me LOL
I read somewhere, probably many years ago that it is common for restaurants to sell squid pretending it is clams.
Growing up, we would sometimes look at the Spanish stations (Channels 41 and 47 in those days) from NJ to watch Professional Wrestling.
ALL the advertisements seemed to be Goya this and Goya that. Later in college in Chicago, the grocery aisles were filled with Goya Goya Goya. Most prominent was a mysterious looking drink called Goya Malta India. Empties were all over the city. Eventually, I succumbed to curiosity and tried some. Bl-urrrgh-fff! Never again. Years later, when the Mexican ice cream man came along singing the praises of jalapeno frozen ices, I knew better.
Has anyone ever run DNA tests on chinese food?

I eat squid and octopus, but it’s not canned; it’s usually fresh or frozen if it’s octopus or dried if it’s squid.
When it isn’t prepared right it’s terrible; and when it done right, it delish.
There’s a sucker born every minute...
Very popular in Puerto Rico-- it's malt soda, basically non-alcoholic, non-hopped dark beer.
Lawyers have the most tenacles.
