econ90-050916Here are the NFIB numbers mentioned, the question now being which trend is the future.

My take is probably the same as yours, that the future "depends"...

Why work when slugs can make more money under government entitlement programs that are so loose that almost anyone can live off the taxpayer?

There is a person for every job is in the USA at the correct market wage. There is a wage gap and not a qualification gap.

It’s a double whammy:

1. Diversity - The push to hire people just because they’re not white—even if they can’t do the job.
2. Skills - Trying to acclimate a group of young people who are: a) entitled [want $15/hr or more to start], b) have short attention spans [for anything other than their smart phone] and c) often lack the discipline to learn.

Gee, maybe they should train people for some of these jobs if existing qualified applicants are lacking.

What qualifications are these small businesses looking for?

Get your resume out into the market place today. Many people will wait until the market gets better and you can be the first in.

Today.

I’m doing some business with a guy who owns a bunch of those distribution/warehouse complexes (with the semi-truck back-up bays) by the highway onramps.

He can hire a basically unlimited number of $10/hour warehouse floor assistants. It’s 50 cents more an hour than fast food or Wal-Mart pays around him, and it lets dudes feel a lot more self-respect (hard-hats and steel toed shoes, not name tag and hair net, no having to deal with fat housewives screaming at them in the aisle or at the register).

When he advertises his $100,000 a year jobs — general manager of a facility, head of IT for the company, head of marketing for the company — he’ll get hundreds of resumes from literally all around the world. Most of the resumes are cr*p, but he still usually has five very qualified people at least for every one spot.

It’s in between that kills him. Support desk to work for that IT director, a secretary for that head of marketing, a shift supervisor for the floor workers who can actually read the day’s manifests and the Excel sheets that plan work flow. What kills him, specifically, is government money. Grossly overpaid pink and blue collar government jobs are impossible to compete with, and SSDI is a huge factor: it’s basically become an early retirement program (as in, mid-40s sometimes) for any blue-collar guy who can follow his lawyer’s script. He also tells me that they end up getting combined — the guys go out on SSDI and their wives are working as secretaries for the school district.

Job Openings VS. Job Applicants

Opening will not accept Applicant because:
Applicant education/training/skills do not meet requirements
Applicant does not have enough experience
Applicant can not pass drug test
Applicant can not pass security background screening

Applicant will not accept Opening because:
Opening does not pay enough
Opening does not offer desired benefits
Opening requires relocation

All of these types of stories are simply globalist propaganda hit pieces used to fuel the misinformation campaign going on in congress and on K St. It is the “excuse” to justify the import more people to wash out the USA’s labor market.

Guess there just aren’t that many people under 40 with 15 years experience out there.

Small-business owners were more upbeat in April, with job openings matching a cycle high, but finding qualified applicants for jobs paying the recession level crap wages they're still offering remains a major problem

I fixed it for them.

Companies offering competitive salaries have long lines of applicants. There's no shortage outside very specialized and difficult fields, or where you need government licensing.

I have to mention that Small Businesses are often guilty as all hell of asking for a ridiculous amount of qualifications for positions - bachelor’s degrees, 2-4 years experience, etc. - that as often as not could be fulfilled by any college grad with an associates.

When I graduated with my IT networking degree I was completely screwed because NOWHERE would even look at someone who didn’t have an expensive certification I couldn’t afford to get after I didn’t pass the first time, couldn’t get hired anywhere to get the 2-6 years experience that I kept seeing listed and couldn’t afford to go back for a better degree.

So yeah, I’m pretty cold to pleas of ‘waaah we can’t FIND anyone’ at this point.
