USS Zumwalt, DDG-1000, complete 2nd US Navy acceptance Trials
FR | May 11, 2016 | Jeff Head

This is one of the best pictures of the new USS Zumwalt destroyer yet.

width=1000>

There she is on her second (very successful) US Navy acceptance trials and will soon be turnd over to the US Navy soon.

They will put her through her paces for the next 18 or more months before commissioning in late 2017 or so. Beautiful and very powerful, modern vessel. The second will launch soon.

See my Flickr Album on this Ship for much more information

It’d pretty naked. No gun turrets?

Awesome ship, but who gets to clean the whale blubber and guts from the bow when it reaches port?

LOL, thanks for the thread, JH. I must admit to being a traditionalist, and while she might be quite powerful in many respects, I have always thought she had a face only a mother could love!

Now, after chewing on it for a bit, I thought some dazzle cammo might make her appear more war-like:

Ironclad designers from the Civil War seem to have had the right ideas in this regard.

Can’t see it due to the camo.

What a weird bow wave. That can’t be good from a hydrodynamic standpoint.

Those two triangular structures forward are 5 inch gun mounts, the barrels are covered for stealth purposes.

They are gun mounts which are set into a gun ring and would fall off if the ship rolled over too far. Turrets are an integral part of the ships structure and extend down to the keel.

As an ex-squid and maritime enthusiast, I have to say that this is the ugliest ship I have ever laid eyes on. That said, I imagine the same thing being said by sailors on their first glimpse of the USS Monitor.

But yeah, I really hate the modern world.

They are 155mm. Some pretty interesting engineering on those guns and the rounds they will be shooting.

Yup. Very advanced gun system. Impressive range and accuracy.
Plus its got missiles.
Plus its got lots of power for a railgun.

This is a destroyer which is pretty much a stealthy battleship.

The ugliest ship I have ever seen. Lord pray for fast exponential increases in computing processing power so this stealth design craze passes.

Call me old-fashioned, but I like the
ship that JimRob served on better.
The times they are a-changing.

Evidently, it has some interesting electrical advances, as well.

It may be an unfamiliar bow wave to you or many but that does not necessarily translate to being inefficient hydrodynamically. As a very simplified rule of thumb, if a hull is producing a large bow or stern wave, that is a indicator of inefficiency in that lots of water is being brute force pushed around at the expense of the hull propelling forward.

The Zumwalt type hull is a wave piercing design closer to what is common for a catamaran hull than to the typical semi displacement traditionally used for warships.

Remember on Star Trek when Kirk would say, “All power to forward shields”?

My understanding is that the Zumwalt puts out enough energy to power a small city and if it comes to a stop it can divert all that power to a railgun. If it had a railgun.

Additional tidbit: the Zumwalt is skippered by Capt Kirk. Seriously.
