he 2016 presidential campaign has hardly lived up to the ideal of a civil exchange of ideas facilitating a peaceful democracy. But a new report from the Southern Poverty Law Center suggests that the acrimony from the campaign trail may be having a broader, negative effect on society particularly in American schools. An online survey of 2,000 educators one that the center notes wasnt scientific found half saying they witnessed an increase in uncivil political discourse during the 2016 campaign. Two-thirds of respondents said their students particularly Muslims, immigrants and children of immigrants openly expressed concerns or fear about what might happen to them or their families after the election.
Muslim children are harassed and worried. Even native-born African-American children, whose families arrived here before the American Revolution, ask about being sent back to Africa, the group said in a report.

The teachers comments, about childrens fears and a subsequent rise in bullying that parallels much of Trumps hate-filled rhetoric, are striking.
Students who had undocumented family members and relatives are afraid of what other kids will think of them if they find out. One [fourth- grade] student reported that she thought everyone hated her because her mother was illegal and she didnt want to come to school. Over 35 percent of our students are Mexican. Ive never had this ... before this year, wrote an elementary school teacher in Vancouver, Wash.
The campaign rhetoric has also fueled an uptick in bullying, teachers in the survey said, observing that students seem emboldened to use increasingly inflammatory statements and engage in name-calling. Years of work on anti-bullying campaigns which had seen results, they say, is being undone.

I have to drive by this cesspool every morning on the way to work and have to keep my windows rolled up to keep from gagging on the stench emanating from their building.
Southern Poverty Law Center = Simpering Political Legal Corruptness.
This is all lies, exaggerations feeding lies, and “feeelings” waiting for a corrupt judge (and a few corrupt newspapers) to propagandize racism and homosexuality, and Islamic terrorism.
Just like the BJ's during the Clinton Lewinsky years?
The SPLC are communists, plain and simple. They only care about the downtrodden poor only so long as necessary to foment revolution. When the revolution is over, they will still be downtrodden and poor, but with new masters.
Obviously it's the fearmongering racebaiting media who lies about Trump that is to blame.
Well, Duh! After the past 8 years of Rainbows and Skittles, the second a Pubbie is in the White House, everything will go back to gloom, despair and agony.

I think this teacher is misidentifying the problem.
Barf alert! No kidding! I thought bullying was George Bush’s fault. How ‘bout the Great Bully in the White House? ‘Spose he might take some of the blame??
Teachers call anything other than politically correct acquiescence to protected minorities “bullying”. They also call self-defense “bullying”.
The charge of “bullying” is meaningless - almost as bad as the charge of “racism”.
I find it interesting that the article talks about pre-revolution black families. I would question any teacher that asserts that as a fact to provide evidence they have ANY information regarding the family histories of the children in their classrooms.
Horrors! Puny kids getting beat up on playgrounds around the country! That never happened until Donald Trump came along.
Sorry, I don’t trust today’s teachers to accurately define what bullying really is.
To libs, a “bully” is anyone who doesn’t cow tow to their radical ways, or dares to speak against them.
I wish that words were the only thing we had to fear from bullies when I went to school.
The Left defines “bullying” as whitey fighting back.
Always, always count on liberals to project their faults onto others.
It works the same way as climate change, it’s settled science.
The election is going to be perhaps the most critical in our lifetimes. The neurotic totalitarian humanists smell our blood, and do not want to be thwarted at the polls. It will be an ugly fight, but we have to carry on, or America in any recognizable form will die.
Exactly.
Like most things in life, a lot is bad but a little bit is good. Now, do kids need to be physically assaulted, brutally thrashed, etc etc? Of course not. But neither do they need to get an adult to adjudicate every situation where someone calls them a mean name.
Or, like the campus "Safe Space" idiots.... someone, somewhere, merely holds an opinion that they might potentially disagree with.
I worry what I'll do as a manager, when these snowflakes start showing up in my workplace. Will I be spending an inordinate amount of time refereeing disputes on who should sit next to who in the lunchroom, and who said what about it?
More likely, these fools will weed themselves out of the employment pool. I certainly hope so.
Agree. Public school kids don’t know who Donald Trump is, much less what he has to say.
Liars...
Is whitey getting uppity again? Now we have a diversity of political bullying.
