In the spring of 1971 I was on the driving range at the North Island Navy airbase when I decided to watch this jet land. If you are looking towards them they seem to be stationary even though they are probably doing over 200 knots on final. This one kept going slower and slower and appeared to be coming in way too high. Then the thing stopped in midair, spun to the left, spun to the right, and slowly went straight down to the deck. That was my introduction to the Harrier.

The Harrier will stay with us, Praise the Lord. Perhaps the only time Britain and France successfully completed a project.
