I would venture -although not having been to my native city London for 20 years, that party lines might have been a factor. I know that in Canada, Mayoral elections are generally run according to the persons vying for the position. Their political affiliations generally not stated.

Khan was backed by the Labour Party. Goldsmith by the Conservative Party. Goldsmith highly educated and from the wealthy class, possibly seen in a certain light. This to his disadvantage. That being said, the legendary Dick Whittington (Three times Lord Mayor of London) is turning in his grave. In his day, Islam was feared and hated. The name given to it's followers as "Moors".

Thanks for your insight in this, that seems reasonable to me though I’ve never been to Britain.

My step FIL must be turning in his grave also. His parents immigrated to the U.S. early last century. He enlisted in the Army shortly before WWII broke out and spent time in London before being sent to France and Germany after the invasion. He then went back to London after the war ended and spent more time there.

He liked to talk about the English people and how strong and resilient there were during the war, of course there were still English there that were relatives of his.

The influx of Muslims is so sad, not only in Britain but many countries in the EU.
