On the Today show this morning they did a piece on this and claimed he is credited with exposing HRC’s use of private email and then spent the rest of the story discrediting his claims that he hacked into it.

Yes. He did not actually hack into accounts. Instead he guessed password or answers to security questions. Going from one person to other interesting people from their email lists
