This being the Guardian Newspaper (UK's NYT only more!) the article is definitely slanted left. One howler is this quote attributed to a progressive lobby org;
Apple pays a 2.3% effective tax rate on its $181bn in cash held offshore, according to Citizens for Tax Justice, a not-for-profit research group focusing on tax policy.

How's that, Apple pays tax on money held overseas. Wow, what a crime!

The city forgot to make that a requirement of issuing permits to build?

Oops.

Nothing is mentioned about payrolls that are taxed, and other revenue generated by Apple in the local area. I remember seeing the video of Steve Jobs, in one of his last public appearances, appearing before the Cupertino council to get approval for this new building and getting push from these politicos for free WiFi and other benefits.

If they are being abused, they should have no complaint if Apple moves elsewhere.

This article is poorly written, and written by somebody who doesn’t understand the difference between property tax and business profit tax. After reading it, I have no idea if Apple pays full property tax, or if the city was dumb enough to give them an incentive. And unless this city has a payroll tax, any discussion of off-shore accounts etc is moot, as far as this mayor is concerned.

The money quote from the mayor:

“Chang is now working on proposals for a business employer tax that would make companies with more than 100 workers pay $1,000 per employee.”

Great plan.

Steve Jobs hisself addressed just some of the benefits Apple’s very presence in Cupertino brings to the city residents, starting at 11:12 in this video:

Seriously, those benefits are HUGE already!

It’s Apple’s right to try to minimize taxes.

It’s the city’s right to impose taxes in whatever way they can to meet their obligations.

It’s Apple’s right to locate their manufacturing overseas to take advantage of cheap labor in communist countries.

It’s America’s right to impose an import tariff or even ban their products.

Good old lefty officials don’t seem to get it. The farming town of Cupertino would be dirt roads and agriculture if it weren’t for the tech companies that helped it grow.

The people complaining are typically engineers (these dos mostly from India) who earn a reasonably great living (ask any other American) and have a very cush life.

I have n empathy for their niggling complaints

Layoffs. Fewer employees with less income, less consumption, less sales tax. Higher unemployment, higher unemployment benefits.

"California economics."

EVERY corporation abuses local government for some sort of freebie in the form of infrastructure or other support.

Pro sports teams are at the top of the list.

You can see Mayor Barry Chang as a member of this meeting at 15:15 into this same clip. Steve Jobs died almost exactly 4 months later from the pancreatic cancer that was obviously affecting him right then, he defined the visual for gaunt!

Property values in Cupertino sure didn’t go down as a result of the Apple campus being set there....are cupertino homeowners as ungrateful as this guy?

Higher property values = higher property taxes

Well here in New Jersey it does

“California economics.”

Great term. Only in California could having a tech giant build its headquarters in your city be a bad thing.

And I just peeked at the map - Apple’s complex is right next to the interstate. I imagine the bulk of any traffic infrastructure problems are state/federal concerns...and it looks like an 8 lane freeway already.

Their property values are very high relative to the property taxes so it’s something they’re propably willing to deal with. Now if Apple were to pick up and leave....

I understand

I am more of the thought that high property values are only good when you are selling, having high property values while you are living on the property just means you pay more in property taxes.

Cupertino is just trying to extend the period of time when they can spend other people’s money!

Did the city get the required system development fees and infrastructure fees required? Any large building like that is going to have to pay for new traffic infrastructure, sewer, electricity, water, utilities, fire department, police department, and all other impact fees. If the council of Cupertino was too dumb to realize this by ‘shiny’ things apple was going to build they have no one to fault but themselves. But I doubt this is the case. As with most large businesses they will get tax incentives and the city more than makes up for it by a new tax base brought in. Although...I have a feeling it will be H1B visas who send all their money back home to India and China.

Cupertino is a VERY wealthy town.

They take in huge sums from the tech industry there.

But just like all liberals, they will never have enough of other peoples money to spend.
