Russia offers free land to all citizens willing to move to the Far East

Call it the Muscovite version of "manifest destiny." On Monday, President Vladimir Putin signed into law a bill that offers every Russian citizen a tract of land in their country's remote Far East.

"All citizens will be entitled to apply for up to hectare of land in the Kamchatka, Primorye, Khabarovsk, Amur, Magadan and Sakhalin regions, the republic of Sakha, or the Jewish and Chukotka autonomous districts," the Moscow Times reports. This is a vast stretch of territory spanning the upper Arctic reaches near Alaska, down to islands off the coast of Japan and deep into the Siberian hinterland.

Those interested in the venture can hold their hectare (about 2.5 acres) free of payment or tax for five years. After that, they would receive titles to their plot provided they have put it to use in the prior years.

What made America great. Private property. Give Russia 100 years and see what they make of it.

Two and half acres? Uhmmm...that’s not going to grow much more than a potato patch.

Oh well, at least they’ll have vodka...

It’s funny. I’ve thought for years that the Russians should do this. It’s amazing how much severely under-populated land they have (most of their country really).

Look at all the Russians in Eastern European countries that don’t want them.

This is actually a feint against the growing Chinese influence in Eastern Russia. Most of the Siberian economy is 100% dependent upon China; most of the infrastructure and jobs comes directly from China. China wants Siberia for the natural resources, and with tens of millions of Chinese now living in Siberia and Beijing effectively controlling the economy of Siberia - Russia needs to do something or in a generation China will “embrace” Siberia and that is that.

Not a bad deal. Vlad-stok is crowded and the "Russian Far East" is fertile fishing, etc.

You opine: “Two and half acres? Uhmmm...that’s not going to grow much more than a potato patch.

Oh well, at least they’ll have vodka...”

au contraire

They do this on 1/10th of an acre...

It is not so simple - everything you said is true - but the Chinese are not all “ethnic” Chinese and Chinese from that part of the world are not exactly the patriotic kind. China is not a homogenous country. China has also rarely moved outside of its ‘realm’. They built a wall for a reason and that wall is also mental. The Chinese prefer to expand their empire via influence. They want nations to come to them and kow tow rather than go out and rule land directly outside of its Chinese heartland.

Russia cannot reproduce itself. Mostly abortions from "westernized" Muscovite women.

No Western nation is reproducing itself - not even the Japanese. I think it has to do with consumer culture. You can’t afford to buy a second vacation home, or second car or pay for vacations or laptops, etc with more kids. Japan is a little different in that they save their money as much as spend it. Having kids is a unselfish act that is not conducive to selfish consumerist spending.

The locals have been crossing the boarder to scout their land. This has been the policy of China for some time.

I thought 160 acres was the norm in the mid 1800’s in America.
