I knew a fairly young lady who was crazy about her basset hound.

I once recited that epitaph to her and asked her if she thought that was true—about the dogs having all the good points of humans and none of their faults.

She said immediately,

“Yes. When I come home from work my dog is totally happy to see me. He never criticizes the way I do my work. He never says, ‘Your hair doesn’t look very good today.’ He accepts me exactly as I am.”
