A man attacked a Metrobus driver with a weapon and hijacked his bus Tuesday morning, D.C. police said. The bus then struck a pedestrian, who later died.

It's not clear where the bus was taken from, but police say the bus in now stopped at a gas station in the 4300 block of Minnesota Avenue in Northeast Washington.

Police say the suspect got on the bus and attacked the bus driver with a weapon. The driver managed to get off the bus, but suffered a back injury in the process. He is expected to be OK.

The suspect then drove the bus a short distance, causing several accidents along the way. In the 3800 block of J Street, the bus struck a pedestrian, who later died.

The kid probably just missed the bus to Sidwells Friends School and didn’t want to be late or he’d never get into Harvard....

You have to wonder about some people and why they do things.

What do you hope to accomplish in stealing a bus? What will you do with it, where do you park it, where do you hide it so you don’t get caught, how can you sell it on a black market somewhere, etc. Why the heck do this in the first place?

How unfortunate for the innocent passengers, the bus driver, and the pedestrian bystander who was killed. :-(

Five years ago, there was some kid who showed up at the Metro depot in DC...just walked in and took a bus from the yard....then started the route of the normal bus driver. He screwed up on some turn and whacked a tree...which alerted everyone onboard that it was a 15-year old kid. Cops stopped him and they finally put real guards at the bus depot in DC.

I’ll make a bet that it’s simply another kid. Hundreds of them around DC with nothing to do, and Metro is a ‘game’ for them.

If only there was some legal way in DC that citizens could protect themselves.

Not clear that it was yutes. Some reports are it was a single adult with a screwdriver. He hit and killed a pedestrian while careening around in the bus.

They really don’t think that far ahead or that deeply.

If only there was some legal way in DC that citizens could protect themselves.

If only.

But this is a case where it wouldn't help to bring a gun to a bus fight. Some yoot' deterrence is needed all up and down the line.

I’m calling for “common sense” bus control. From now on only “smart busses” linked to the drivers DNA and social security number will be allowed. Then only after said driver having passed a full NCIC background check post a “waiting period” shall the bus be electronically authorized. “If it only saves one life”.

They shouldn’t put too much effort into taking the murderer alive. A sniper might be a good idea. Bus windows can be replaced.
