I used to have a cigarette lighter from USS Ronquil that I had been given by a Vietnam Army Vet who held the bronze star.
Sadly this bit of history was lost or stolen

The FR Canteen is Free Republic's longest running daily thread
specifically designed to provide entertainment and moral support for the military.
The doors have been open since Oct 7 2001,
the day of the start of the war in Afghanistan.
We are indebted to you for your sacrifices for our Freedom.
Howdy do, Conor. *Hugz*
Did the train derailment cause hassles for you getting to work today?
Howdy, PRO!
Another pretty day out your way today?
Thanks for another great road trip....to a state I’d love to visit some day!
Oo-rah for the Marines stationed there!
Howdy, Kathy.
Has the day gone as badly as you feared it might? I hope not.
Yup, 87 degrees today and more tomorrow before a temporary cool down.
This is my last night dog-sitting, no problems with them today.
Interestingly enough, and staying with this thread's Hawaii theme, son just called me from Pearl Harbor as they were finished touring and asked me if I wanted a Pearl Harbor hat or shirt. I said hat as, "that's my style", LOL.
Good day for me all around, how about you?

Lucky you! It was another cloudy, chilly day here and we got a little rain. Not enough but we’ll take what we can get!
Good doggies, not making any messes today!
What timing for your son to call. Did you tell him about the thread? Cool that you’ll get a Pearl Harbor cap when he gets home.
Quiet day here. Too wet to get outside to do stuff so I just did some house work. woo.
Called the vet to schedule Cooper’s surgery and I’ll drop him off late tomorrow afternoon. They’ll nip him in the buds first thing Wed. morning.
I’m going to miss his fabulous jowls when they shrink.
Ah, good! I thought about you when I saw the reports about the derailment and didn’t know if you took that line or not.
Looked like a pretty big mess to clean up.
I feel for the folks who depend on that line to get to work or wherever.
Good evening, Mac...*HUGS*...still the same project? A new one on the horizon?
Overcast all day. Hints of rain all around, but nothing. We need rain.
Good evening, Pro...son and family home soon?
You haven’t lived till you’ve been ripped to shreds skinny dipping in the moonlight in Hanauma bay LOL
They’re coming home tomorrow, check out post #29.
Guam was dangerous too LOL
Damned Island could tip over is a NY second LOL
But seriously the razor coral
In 1969 I was permanently based in the Philippines though we spent the majority of our time in DaNang, VN. I had been on a special assignment to NSA and recommended to our CO that we change our mission to include an additional item (I was a linguist flying intercept missions). The CO agreed.
Without that addition, our group would have been relocated from the PI/DaNang to Kaneohe. (sp?)
