Yes I agree, that it is poorly written. I thought at first the Ex-Marines wife had been shot. No expert on grammar myself, I saw that two words would suffice.

Assuming he was honorably discharged and committed no crime, there is no such thing as an ex-Marine. He is a Marine at another duty station. Semper fi, brother.
