Obamacare's November surprise (consumers will see large rate increases for the first time Nov. 1)
Politico ^ | May 2, 2016 | Paul Demko

The last thing Democrats want to contend with just a week before the 2016 presidential election is an outcry over double-digit insurance hikes as millions of Americans begin signing up for Obamacare.

But that looks increasingly likely as health plans socked by Obamacare losses look to regain their financial footing by raising rates.

Just a week after the nation’s largest insurer, UnitedHealth Group, pulled out of most Obamacare exchanges because it anticipates $650 million in losses this year, Aetna’s CEO said Thursday that his company expects to break even, but legislative fixes are needed to make the marketplace sustainable.

“I think a lot of insurance carriers expected red ink, but they didn’t expect this much red ink,” said Greg Scott, who oversees Deloitte’s health plans practice. "A number of carriers need double-digit increases.”

In some ways, the turmoil is not surprising: Under the health care law, plans are unable to choose who to insure, or how much to charge them based on their medical history. As a result, many plans enrolled a larger proportion of sicker people than they bargained for. But some of those losses were also a function of political wrangling after Republican lawmakers blocked payments that were supposed to help insurers get through the difficult first years.

“No one will accept single payer.”

Obamacare was probably the last shot of anything involving private insurance. I think single payer is a lot closer than you think.

The “November Surprise” will just get postponed until after the election. The socialist elite will demand this to prevent any negative optics from affecting the election.

That article is not near the negative hit piece the title would lead one to believe.

I was at a grocery store buying groceries for a nice dinner a couple of days ago. the tab came to $144. i gave a store requent customer discount card to bring the total down a bit. but it was still high. I needled the cashier, a 30 something guy, saying i was paying for his retirement. he laughed and said he wished it were true. i responded, ok, your health care then. he laughed and said that was the same story — no. then he gave me some coupons and asked me if there was anything else i needed. i said do you have a bernie sanders action figure? he laughed and said no, but his mother does have a hillary clinton nutcracker. i said yeah, that’s for men who stray off the reservation. he laughed and said he was voting for hillary. i decided to retreat because by that point we were both surrounded by women shoppers and i did not like the odds of escaping unharmed if i identified myself as a libertarian. but what guy with a part time minimum wage job, no retirement and no health care see in hillary clinton? if the cashier were a woman, at least hillary could have the appeal of being the same gender, even if nothing else made sense...

No one will accept single payer.

We have a country that elected Obama 2x. We have a middle-class of all political stripes paying high premiums which will go higher as the post cites. We like our Social Security and Medicare systems, which are socialist programs.

If the "free market" does not provide medical services at a reasonable cost, I believe we will see single payer. We can argue that our government is the obstacle to fair priced medicine but that doesn't fix the problem.

Again, regardless or cause, if the "free market" cannot provide the majority with medical services at a reasonable cost, people will vote their pocketbook and embrace single-payer - IMHO.

Cashier in line I used this weekend was complaining because so many people were in his line and nobody was going through the self-check lines. I started to respond to his comment but the guy behind he just shook his head and said “Save your breath - don’t even try and explain it to him. He’ll never understand and you will just get frustrated.”

“what (does a) guy with a part time minimum wage job, no retirement and no health care see in hillary clinton?”

The same thing many low wage earners saw in Obama: Someone who would give them access to things they saw in TV commercials that wealthier people were buying. So many people see themselves as basically marginalized economically that they have to look for a more extreme solution; odd that the guy wasn’t a Sanders supporter.

From all appearances, ObamaCare was designed to make the case for single-payer (not really be an alternative). As other FReepers have described, these health insurance companies are losing their shirts because they basically are operating like an auto insurance company that has to pay out your claim when you had a car accident without insurance and the government made them retroactively cover you.

They never anticipated so many healthy people would opt out instead of paying for unneeded insurance; the rising penalties were to correct that without costing Obama re-election. It won’t work anyway because the demographic shifts have removed many of the Anglo hosts the government parasites would feed on in the past; this country, between the horrible economy and a negative birthrate, is running out of white people to tax for all the free sh!t...

I remember that pig Pelosi saying ObamaCare was necessary so people wouldn’t be forced to remain in undesirable jobs just for health insurance. This law has made clinging to any job with health insurance (that meets the ObamaCare requirements) absolutely critical. People weren’t “liberated” from their jobs; they were shackled to their oars with additional chains instead.

Which reminds me of crazy Joe Biden’s dog-whistle racial slam: “They’re gonna put ya back in chains!”

It is cold comfort in dealing with your financial distress, but this in fact is what ObamaCare was designed to do (and why the Supreme Court referred to it as a “tax”). It was funded in part by cuts to Medicare, and it IS available to illegals (remember Joe “You Lie” Wilson?); that really exposed the whole agenda (and death panel angle).

To reduce us to serfdom, our overlords are doing their best to ensure that we die penniless beyond the cost of our disposal; it truly is complete re-distribution.
