Parishioners watched in horror as a massive four-alarm fire engulfed a Serbian Orthodox church in Manhattan on Sunday hours after hundreds celebrated Easter services, authorities said.
For this to happen on such a holy day, I dont know what to say, said Alex Velic, a 31-year-old churchgoer, as enormous fireballs erupted from the shattered windows of the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava on West 25th Street.
To see it burning like that is such a shock. Its just so sad, he said. I cant think of the words to express how Im feeling.
A force of 170 firefighters responded to the fire, which started shortly before 7 p.m., FDNY officials said.

Sad...Originally built to supplement growth of the famous Trinity Church.
Purposefully set. Would this be Bill Clinton’s own “Roosters coming home to roost?”
I hope not.
To see such a landmark destroyed is truly saddening. But I really don’t think this was a candle on a carpet, or a fire in a trash can.
It does look professional.
I don’t know. Proof would be people handing out candy to children. (I do see such a day coming).
I saw this on a thread early this morning.
The church was a Richard Upjohn design. There were quite a few of his churches back home. A few homes, too!
This is EXACTLY what happens when you mount a jet engine on a church and engage the afterburners.
Other Orhodox churches also burned yesterday. Something is up.
This is horrible. I cried when I saw the story this morning, because it was my family church back in the early 1900s when they all still lived in Manhattan.
My grandfather was baptized there. I think it was Episcopal at the time, before being sold to the Serbian Orthodox folks.
According to Wikipedia it was originally an Episcopal church and was sold to the Serbian Orthodox church in the 1940s. Edith Wharton was married in the church when it was still Episcopalian. When they reported the fire on the news and said how old the building was, I didn’t think there could have been enough Serbian immigrants in New York City at that time to have the church built.
Somebody celebrating May Day.
Just now, I posted an article about Orthodox churches catching fire in Australia. Same deal - just after Easter - massive fires which suddenly destroyed the whole church.
We are at war on our shores. Has Bammy said anything? Thought so.
