About twenty years ago, I read of groups existing in remote areas in Mexico. They were the direct descendants of the indigenous people. There had been an outcry about the seizing of their land by concerned people in the USA. I don't know how it all ended.
I understand but might be wrong, that in Mexico, the lighter skinned people are, the more likely better off. The surnames stamp the European heritage of the majority in Mexico.
I overreacted as well, sorry for the drama. And glad that you have a Filipina gf. the Philippines is a country where we SHOULD be accepting large immigration. They have proven to be one of the highest educated and best performing immigrant groups that assimilate well into American culture.
The hispanic semantics here began with the Cuban Freeper who feels dissed on FR (and probably in real life) for being lumped together with Latinos->Mexicans. He’s tired of the stereotype of the alien gang Mexican culture. FWIW, Cubans have not formed murdering gangs and taken over swaths of US cities, nor do they have a high incarceration rate. They do have high rates of professionals, professors, engineers, entrepreneurs, college-educated, etc. For the most part, they are an extension of Spain & European culture with a heavy island flavor. Understand that Cuban-Americans, kept calling themselves Cubans for decades, and rightfully so. They always dreamed of overthrowing Castro and returning to their homeland. Plus Cubans are still firmly on the Right side of politics.
Playing identity politics here, but nearly all new Mexican immigrants identify as democrats. They likely will not change affiliation for several generations. And those are the ones that we need on our side. OTH, Cuban exiles once identified 95% as Republicans (excepting Rafael Cruz). The old generations of Cubans are some of the staunchest supporters of the republican party. Their strong vote in Florida and their millions of dollars put GWB in office. And Cubans HATE, yes HATE socialism and communism and anything that remotely resembles that form of government. They curse Castro more than the devil, himself. Unfortunately, many of the newer and younger generations of Cubans have grown soft or been 100% brainwashed by Castro and haven’t the foggiest idea.
I did a lot of what I guess would be called charity work down in Mexico back in the late 70’s and early 80’s.
I would purchase what our school district up here would call surplus or obsolete materials and truck it down there to reinstall in rural schools.
Student desks, light fixtures, paint, plumbing fixtures, black boards, boxes of pencils, reams of older style copy paper, any thing that the district considered obsolete or too old fashioned.
The bureaucrats, politicians, and state or federal agencies I had to deal with were a bunch of greedy, corrupt , pains in the ass.
The kids, their parents and the local shop keepers were pretty good people, the others not so much.
The kids and parents would pitch in to help with the remodels, the local shopkeepers spoke better english than some of the guys who worked with me here in the states, and were very helpful in tracking down all the parts and pieces you need to do a retrofit remodel project.
DO NOT DEAL DIRECTLY WITH THE RURAL SCHOOL PRINCIPALS, THEY ARE A BUNCH OF THIEVES AND CROOKS.
These projects were out of my own pocket (I was not a rich man by any measure), the graft finally got so bad I had to just say to hell with it and stop.

God Bless you for all that you did for those children. I’m sure it enriched their lives and helped them get a better education. The corruption seems to be at the heart of their problems.

Got no problem helping people who are dirt poor because of circumstances beyond their control (was dirt poor as kid myself, divorced mother back in the late 40’s and up through the early 60’s).

I once went in a little quaint grocery store in a po dunk town in North Carolina that was advertising pecan pies like crazy.
We went in to pick up the pie and I was the ONLY white, non-Mexican person in the store. The store had entire aisles devoted to Mexican foods--straight up serious Mexican foods that would rival any store here in Arizona, I am not talking Old El Paso. And this was about 6 years ago, before the dreamers and the borders were completely open.
