No, Ted Cruz Was Not 'John Boehner's Lawyer"

The media is working hard to convince you that they caught Ted Cruz in a lie about working with John Boehner. But they are the ones lying, as usual.

During an interview hosted by Stanford in Government (SIG) and the Stanford Speakers Bureau, former House Speaker John Boehner referred to presidential candidate Ted Cruz as “Lucifer in the flesh.” He continued, “I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.”

But Boehner did not “work” with Ted Cruz. Boehner only worked against Cruz as he golfed with Trump, who Boehner referred to as his “texting buddy.”

The comments are reminiscent of other nasty names Boehner has used to describe the constant anti-establishment thorn in his side. Last year, the failed Speaker referred to Cruz as a “jackass,” and still another time as a “false prophet.

As reported at TrevorLoudon.com, Cruz responded in part by saying that he “…never worked with Boehner, and he’s only met him two or three times.” During a 2014 interview at cincinnati.com, Boehner confirmed that he has “not talked to [Cruz]” since he was elected:

— On Cruz, who has given Boehner heartburn by encouraging House conservatives to block moderate proposals floated by Boehner’s team: ‘I’ve not talked to him since he’s been elected’ to the Senate in 2012.

During Thursday’s press conference, Cruz said that he did attempt to reach out to Boehner, but was rebuffed:

“I’ve never had any substantive conversation with John Boehner in any respect,” said Cruz, but he did comment that during the government shutdown, he and Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee reached out to Boehner.

“I offered to come over and work with the speaker,” said Cruz. “I asked him, ‘can we resolve this and actually get something meaningful done to stop the disaster that is Obamacare?’ John Boehner’s response was ‘I have no interest in talking to you. What possibly could be accomplished by having a conversation? No, I will not meet.’”

Watch the entire press conference here.

The mainstream media was very excited to report that Ted Cruz was likely lying about not having a “substantive conversation” with Boehner. They point to an interview Boehner had on Leno as reported at the Washington Post, where Boehner said this:

“Ted Cruz used to be my attorney a long time ago. A good guy. I don’t always agree with him, but he’s a good guy.”

Cruz’s involvement in the case was also discussed in 1998 at The Seattle Times, where Cruz made a statement and was referred to as “an attorney for Boehner.”

Boehner did not speak of any relationship with Cruz, but still, the media was very excited to slam Cruz in any way possible: • CBS breathlessly reported: “Cruz’s claim that he’s never spoken more than fifty words to Boehner is a dubious one…” • NBC dramatically reported that although Cruz said that he has barely spoken with Boehner, “…the two men have a past. The former speaker had actually used Cruz’s considerable legal talents in a rare court fight among lawmakers. In fact, Ted Cruz was once John Boehner’s lawyer.” What is really disturbing about the NBC piece is that something closer to the truth is buried in the article: “Sources close to Boehner say he and Cruz had met during the lawsuit but likely never had contact after Cruz arrived on Capitol Hill in 2013.” So the article goes from “Ted Cruz was once John Boehner’s lawyer” to “…he [Boehner] and Cruz had met during the lawsuit”? • The headline at Fox News was “Cruz claims he doesn’t know Boehner – but was his lawyer.” • In an article titled “Ted Cruz, We’ve Caught You in a Lie,” Gawker quotes Cruz as saying “I’ve never worked with John Boehner… I’ve never known the man.” The article continues to condescendingly declare, “But Ted, you were his lawyer.”

Cruz campaign spokeswoman Catherine Frazier told MailOnline Cruz was a ‘junior associate’ assigned to the Boehner case. Frazier said,

“His [Cruz’s] involvement in it [Boehner’s case] didn’t extend beyond assisting with briefs and attending meetings with Boehner’s staff. He doesn’t recall personally interacting with Boehner during that time.”

I don't know how many times I saw "Cruz was Boehner's Lawyer" on Free Republic. This board has become unreliable.

Business Insider thinks that Cruz was indeed hired by Boehner. http://www.businessinsider.com/ted-cruz-john-boehner-lawyer-2016-4

Former House Speaker John Boehner ripped into Sen. Ted Cruz in a memorable fashion during a Wednesday appearance, prompting Cruz to say that he “doesn’t know” Boehner.

“I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a b—— in my life,” Boehner said, dubbing Cruz “Lucifer in the flesh.”

But a closer look at their history reveals that the two weren’t always enemies. In fact, long before Boehner saw Cruz as Lucifer, the 2016 Republican presidential candidate was actually his lawyer.

It was 1998, more than a decade before Boehner became speaker and Cruz was elected to the Senate. Boehner had just sued Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Washington) for allegedly breaking wiretapping laws, according to The Washington Post.

That lawsuit stemmed from a Florida couple recording a call between Boehner and then House Speaker Newt Gingrich that they heard on a police scanner. They sent the call to McDermott, who later allegedly released it to The New York Times and other publications. The call centered around ethical violations Gingrich faced at the time, and McDermott was the top Democrat on the House Ethics Committee, according to The Post.

Furious, Boehner called it an invasion of privacy. He hired Cruz, who had recently served as a clerk for then Chief Justice William Rehnquist. The then 27-year-old Cruz made an early appearance in the press defending his client after Boehner sent out a fundraising appeal to help pay for his legal defense.

“The fund-raising letter is much ado about nothing,” Cruz told The Seattle Times. “Congressman McDermott has consistently attempted to delay the litigation and drive up the expense. It is reasonably expected that Congressman Boehner will use the means at his disposal to raise the funds to pursue this lawsuit.”

Cruz wouldn’t end up working Boehner’s case for long, though, and there wasn’t a ruling in the case until 2004, when a federal judge sided with the Ohio congressman. Boehner ended up being awarded more than $1 million in legal fees.

Boehner was asked about the whole ordeal by Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” last year, when he called his old legal pal a “good guy,” The Post reported.

“I don’t always agree with him, but he’s a good guy,” he said.

What rubbish. Boehner as Speaker had direct dealings with Cruz in the Senate. I even saw them together on television regarding the budget. Why is everyone trying to dissect this to this degree? It is obvious they had dealings with one another.

Cruz worked for a law firm that apparently represented Boehner in some manner. Technically, all lawyers working for a firm representing a client are that client’s lawyer according to the professional rules of conduct. But, to say he was Boehner’s lawyer is really a huge stretch of reality. And I’m no Cruz fan.

What is unreadable are more Cruz lies. Business Insider has a direct quote from Cruz in Seattle Times in 1998 discussing his client Boehner. In 1998 Cruz thought he was Boehner’s lawyer. But like Democrats apparently anything earlier than today can be lied about.

The problem is when one is caught lying constantly it’s easy to believe other things he’s said are lies.

Personally, if Boner is against Cruz it makes wish Cruz would become president. And he could have if he hadn’t been so arrogant. But he blew his chance forever.

Ted Cruz admitted it on Hannity yesterday. He says it was a long time ago.

Kinda reminds me of Obama. A forward on his first book touted his Kenyan birth.

Truth is a fungible commodity for these people.

Not every lawyer in a firm is free to discuss a client case with the press as Cruz did with the Seattle Times. That is the job of the lead attorney.

An article from 1998 may provide context since it quotes Cruz as Boehner’s attorney as a matter of public record long before the 2 016campaign began:

“But Ted Cruz, Boehner’s attorney, said the fund-raising letter demonstrates nothing and highlights the weakness of McDermott’s defense. Boehner alleges that McDermott gave the taped phone call - which Republicans argue did not violate any promise made by Gingrich - to The New York Times, The Atlanta Journal and Roll Call, a semiweekly congressional newspaper.”

Liar liar. Who’s got your liar. Here’s yer shovel, takes yer pick. This whole political landscape is a cesspool of liars. There’s always been a lot of spinning and liars. But the Clintons really took it to new levels in the 90s and it’s only gotten worse. Agw, LGBT’s, gope, RATs, EPA, educrats, Fox, MSM, USSC... Liars liars and more liars. No integrity. Say anything for money and power or to forward you sick ‘ism’.

We need a good “reset”.

Buckeye Boehner may be worse than Buckeye Kasich, or is it a tie?

Typical of today’s worship of contradiction; i.e. Cruz both was and was not Boehner’s lawyer. Politicians love confusion. Cruz is a politician; therefor Cruz loves confusion. I’ll leave the matter to those wiser than me.

If Boehner likes him, he is the devil incarnate. If Boehner hates him, it proves he can’t get along with anyone, and everyone hates him.

If on the other hand, Boehner likes Trump, its that Trump is a uniter. If GOPe types get behind Cruz, he is a sell-out. If they get behind Trump, they are accepting reality, and again, Trump is a uniter.

I like both men. We are lucky that the only two men in the GOP I would trust as president, are the only two men left standing. Both are proving to be tough fighters prepared to fight to the last bullet. I can’t wait to see one or the other of them in the White House. Its heads we win, tails we win.

Cruz isn’t going to be the nominee either - this issue is moot.
