WHEN 4 IS A PRIME NUMBER

BRAHMS: QUARTET IN B-FLAT, OP. 67, VIVACE

Johannes Brahms once said that he had written twenty quartets and had used the manuscripts to paper the walls in his apartment. He wasn’t joking. Because Beethoven had such huge boots to fill in the composition of symphonies and string quartets, Jo wasn’t sure he was ready to publish in those genres until he reached middle age. His two quartets of Opus 51 have always left me cold, but the Opus 67 quartet is a blast. It’s always fun to find Brahms in one of his sunny moods. Those are horn calls in the strings that open the movement. The second subject is a ländler, a German country dance.

Brahms: Quartet in B-flat, Op. 67, first movement

BRAHMS: QUARTET IN B-FLAT, OP. 67, ALLEGRETTO NON TROPPO

This is not a scherzo, but an intermezzo, short and sweet, that gives a view of how Brahms could shape a dance movement. Catch that long, hanging note at the end.

WHEN 4 IS A PRIME NUMBER

VERDI: QUARTET IN E MINOR, ALLEGRO

Up until the late 19th Century, the string quartet was the exclusive property of the German-speaking world. Then the Italians, French, Hungarians, Czechs and Russians got into the game.

Giuseppe Verdi – Joe Green in English – wrote this quartet in a hotel room in Naples while awaiting the revival of two of his operas, and the premier was given in that hotel room by four musicians from the opera house pit orchestra. I played the scherzo a few weeks ago, but here is the first movement. Right away, you can hear that Joe is using the language of the opera house.
