Trump's foreign policy speech left experts puzzled or appalled

Donald Trump gave an amazing speech about his approach to US foreign policy on Wednesday, at least according to Donald Trump. At an event sponsored by the Center for the National Interest, the Republican presidential frontrunner delivered a 5,000-word speech touching on his criticisms of the Obama administration’s approach to national security, the need to whip US allies into shape, and promised that he alone can restore what he described as the lost standing of the US in world affairs.

A Trump foreign policy would eschew “nation building” but would still somehow promote stability worldwide. It would teach our allies to trust us again, even while making a point of behaving “unpredictably.” It would teach the US military to “fight to win,” as opposed to...whatever it is he thinks the military does now.

It was, again according to Trump, a huge success.

(detecting a whiff of condesendsion?)

What’s sad is that they don’t realize that it was a
success with the American people, and that is what matters.

Guess what...'nation building' is NOT promoting stability anywhere.

It WAS a success...I’m 67 years old and have followed politics since the JFK assassination...
That was probably the best foreign policy speech I’ve ever heard...

AMERICA FIRST....GO TRUMP!!!!!!

“It would teach our allies to trust us again, even while making a point of behaving “unpredictably.” “

Stopped reading right there. The unpredictability is for our enemies, duh.

Those people that don't understand or don't want to understand what Trump said in his speech are either the ‘elites’ that think they are better than anyone else, or knows more when they actually don't...

We Americans are backing Donald J. Trump for POTUS....everyone needs to understand that, WE AMERICANS..not the GOPe; RINObase; Wall Street; Super packs; special interest groups....WE AMERICANS....deal with it!!!

Trump's foreign policy speech left experts puzzled or appalled

Are these the same experts who predicted Trump was going to drop out of the race after Super Tuesday?

No doubt about it. Better than any speech by words and the way it was delivered.

I followed the written text with the live viewing. He put adlibs in there to emphasize him point.

I think it’s clear. Trump is going to be Trump. He is going to give the message and let the people vote. If he wins, and wins big, then he will have the mandate he needs.

If he loses, then I guess that pops our bubble doesn’t it.

We can basically grab our guns and get ready for a future that is not secure for anyone any where.

That speech was not intended for Karl Rove, or for the NYTimes or the WSJ. that speech was intended for our enemies.

no no- the experts on FR are much more believable than actual policy experts who’s job is to actually make policies that keep us safe around the world— After all, it’s not what the experts think- it’s what people who don’t understand policy think that matters-

Trump's foreign policy speech left experts puzzled or appalled

I don't think it was geared to the experts. It was meant for the voters who support him.

I watched it and I was not puzzled or appalled. The problem must be that I am not a defense expert. I was born in Japan because my dad was in the Air Force. I lived in Germany for 7 years as a kid. I fully understand the European strategy of defense which is to let the US do it. I liked what Trump said, especially the parts about radical Islam and ISIS.

Since “experts” are generally either stupid or bought and paid for, this is probably a good thing.

I'd love to know what the author thinks the military does now.
