The House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday approved by a narrow margin an amendment to a defense bill to require women to register for the draft.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, a Republican from California, proposed the amendment to lift the restriction on women registering for the selective service at a committee-wide mark-up session of the proposed fiscal 2017 National Defense Authorization Act.

"Here is why I think this is important; it doesn't matter in this debate whether you think women should be in the infantry or be in special operations," Hunter said during the session on Wednesday night. "I personally don't. If we had that vote in committee today I would vote against women being in infantry and special operations.

Ok for women to be required to register.

NOT OK for women to serve in combat roles!

It would weaken the military.

Sorry Kellis91789, but a lot of the jobs you referred to entail a lot of upper body strength. Truck, tank, and track drivers all pull maintenance on their vehicles as well as resupplying the ammo and fuel in said vehicle. Don’t really see some 105lb girl working a breaker bar to replace a track on a M1A2 or Bradley, or replacing a blown tire on a LMTV or 5 ton truck. Same with “sighting a mortar platoon” Base plates, mortar tubes, and bipods actually got some weight to them as well as humping the rounds...I guess the men can do all that, and the woman can just direct. Sorry, it doesn’t work that way. This PC nonsense is gonna bite us in the a$$ big time.

Personally, I think people should attempt to put this issue in proper perspective. I could be wrong, but it is my understanding that only about 15% of service men and women are in combat roles where there is risk of life and limb.

Should there only be male mechanics, planners, communications and radar technicians, procurement officers, cooks, nurses, doctors, intelligence officers, etc, and why not Mable and Alice sitting somewhere in East Fumbuck, Iowa piloting drones over ISIS oil convoys?

There is a history of women serving in the military, and unless you believe females are inferior to males, there is no logical reason to exempt women from the draft.

6 of their 7 brothers were called up and went off to fight...

it was a family thing...

I had a heavy vehicle license while I was in the USAF during Nam...

Why cant a woman drive a truck in the military ???

Many drive huge trucks in civilian jobs...

Something as Yuge as this should require a bit more than a Panel or Blue Ribbon Committee

I could not disagree more. Men and women are fundamentally different. Recognition of differences does not imply superiority of one over the other. Which is a better tool: a hammer or a screw driver? The differences between men and women are from the hand of God. It is a rebellion against God and an injustice toward women to deny these differences and force them into male roles. The fact that individual women might be to perform one or another male tasks is irrelevant. The good of society and the good of the family requires us to respect the complementary natures of men and women. It is time that we push back against this century old experiment of androgyny.

“””Dear God, I hate what this country has become. Sending women to death? Women that are supposed to be bearing and nurturing the next generation? It’s evil, pure evil.”””

As much as I am against drafting women, you do understand those being drafted (not all of them) support ripping babies up in the womb which to me should be the most honored place in the world..........so they are not totaling into “bearing and nurturing”, like they should be

In Starship Troopers, only citizens had the ability to vote. The greater mass of the population did not participate in elections (probably a good thing because it culled out the low information voters). Full citizenship and full rights involved service and sacrifice. That's something many people don't want to even consider — if they could pass the physical. This is especially true where life and limb are involved and, in the book, it was a war against the Bugs (nasty aliens).

That’s another thing that’s wrong with our society: the majority of married women whose husbands have stable incomes won’t bear children, while the useless eaters on welfare pop out kids all the time.

Nurses are not soldiers and they were not drafted, they volunteered. I hold women in high regard. That is why I do not demand that they be treated as men. It is those who belittled the traditional roles of women and insist that they are only valued when they act as men who do not hold them in much esteem.

As you know, driving a truck in the civilian world is a lot different than driving one in the military. You break down on the highway, you call a tow truck; break down in some crap hole foreign country, you have to sort yourself out. I’m not against females in the military as there are a lot of jobs they can do, they do not belong in combat unit, nor in any special operations units other than in an intel capacity. Females are great elicitors of information. Thank you entire family for their service, as well as yours. My grandpa, my dad, and myself all served, as well as my 2 sons currently serving. I did my 20 in the army with 7 in 2nd Ranger Bn and then 13yrs in Special Forces.
