I don’t think that he was saying that invading Iraq was good because it gave democracy to the Muslims, but that it gave us a footprint in the ME. With our presence there it should/could bring stability to the ME. We could keep track of ME better. Remember that much of the ME is dedicated to our destruction, as well as Israel’s. This was true and ultimately good for us and our allies but it was all thrown away when we picked up and left.
There are a few qualities I admire about Trump, and prefer him to Hillary. Foreign policy so far is not one, and not a Trump forte. Alas, he Will learn.
That said, every administration, including Obama’s has always put “America First”, only different way of approaching it.
