The Pentagon is looking to raise the price of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco sold on U.S. military installations worldwide, in an attempt to ween U.S. service members from tobacco use. Defense Secretary Ash Carter codified the policy in an April 8th department-wide memorandum, which also expanded smoke-free areas on American military bases, according to Reuters. The new tobacco policy would increase prices on cigarettes and smokeless tobacco sold at U.S. military commissaries and post exchanges to match the price of tobacco products sold off base, which are subject to state and local taxes. That was cheap! I had to pay $1.50! (When a fleet suppy ship got near enough to shore for us to run long stem san pan out to it.)
No kidding, the costs will damn near double given the extra 10-15 years the non-smokers will live. Unless you subtract that much from obesity and type 2 diabetes. It may even out.
I guess US military members have too much disposable income.

Thanks. I am sure that Mencken would be fine with your reference. I changed my tagline when I read your reply.
That’s a great tagline-and so true.
When DUMBBO first took office the base went to full tax burden on smokes, and then they took booze and smokes off the scratch off cards.
Hasn’t changed anyone’s preference to smoke that I can see. Nor did it in NYC where they went to $7 a pack. So now you just go to a grocery store that gives gas points and buy your smokes and get a few cents off your gas.
Keep smoking, keep feeding the state and feds taxation need. That would be a stronger incentive to quit than their health one.
Between groceries, eat out or Lowe’s, BD and Christmas gift cards which are twice the points, and some times 4 times the points, you can get $1 a gal off a tank of gas up to 35 gals. Hubby fills my car out of the lawnmower gas can, and then takes the can and Equinox up and fills both. We are back at the near $2 mark on gas, so that will make a fill about a buck a gal this month and next.
Kroger’s is 2 miles away round trip, Commissary where prices are almost equal to Kroger’s sans gas points, is 24 miles round trip. Plus it’s open 7 days a week and later in the evening instead of 6.
