Prince Died Without a Will, According to Sister (Huge legal mess)
NY Times ^ | 04-26-2016 | BEN SISARIO

Prince died without a will, according to court documents filed by his sister on Tuesday, potentially causing big complications for that star’s sprawling financial estate and musical legacy.

In probate documents filed with the Carver County District Court in Minnesota, Tyka Nelson, 55, Prince’s sister, said that her brother died without a spouse, children or surviving parents, and that “I do not know of the existence of a will.”

Ms. Nelson’s petition also listed five half-siblings as heirs, and asked the court to appoint a special administrator for the estate “because no personal representative has been appointed in Minnesota or elsewhere.” Minnesota law treats surviving half-siblings the same as full siblings, raising the possibility of a drawn-out family battle.

I have a collection of old wills from an historic project. Noticed some folks were very careful to give one dollar to some so they could never protest it.

Exactly. Prince was a druggie and pill popper. There are proabably 25 wills that will come to light naming all sorts of tag-a-longs, leaches, employees, drug suppliers, CONfidants, etc.

BLUF: It is going to be a BIG mess.

Unbelievable. Someone worth hundreds of millions of dollars didn’t even have a will. What kind of legal advisors did he have?

“Or they got rid of the unregistered will they did not like.”

You mean the one leaving it all to the Jehovah’s Witnesses?

His sister, TYKA, a former crack cocaine addict. She will get it all, unless she can claim some for Prince's half-nephews/half nieces.

If he has half siblings I can virtually guarantee they’ll be the same as full blood siblings. It’s that way in most states given a death intestate. They are all co-equals.

I’m dealing with that now with my younger brother’s death.

Although I have no knowledge of how Prince lived, I’ll go out on a limb and assume he has been, in one way or another, supporting his family and likely many others for some time. And since he has no known heir, the State of Minnesota should be his beneficiary But I’m no lawyer..

I’ve seen a side of a few people that I never knew existed, due to wanting various things from an elderly relative. Sometimes, they’ll just take what they want and not even bother to wait until after death. Others are more stealthy, they suddenly become very close and convince the elderly relative to give it to them. I’ve never been comfortable with the whole vulture-circling thing.

“Our lawyer told us some horror stories, though.”

It’s hard to keep a good attitude about human nature after a while.
