How about LBJ? Another former school teacher who got rich on the public payroll. Virtually broke when he was elected to Congress; by the time he left the White House, ol’ “Landslide Lyndon” had holdings that included a huge ranch, radio and TV stations, making him a multi-millionaire. And he never spent a day in the private sector.

The first day that Dennis Hastert worked in the private sector was after his career in Congress, as a lobbyist for Dickstein Shapiro.
When Hastert entered Congress his net worth was around $270,000, mainly from inherited property. When he retired from Congress he was worth somewhere between $4 million and $17 million.
