CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Venezuelan cities cleaned up from a night of looting and fiery protests Wednesday as government offices closed their doors for the rest of the week in the face of a worsening energy crisis that is causing daily blackouts.

The socialist administration began imposing a four-hour daily blackout around the country this week to save power. Then on Tuesday, President Nicolas Maduro announced that millions of officials will now work only Monday and Tuesday.

"...71% of their power is hydroelectric. And the reservoirs are dry...."

"Global warming? :-)"

The planet is not cooperating with the liberal efforts to save the earth from global warming.

Well said. Theodore Dalrymple’s book ‘The Wilder Shores of Marx’ should be mandatory reading.

Have been following how Venezuela, and now it would seem it is about to get uglier there as people suffer more. Prayers to them, and hope for left leaning minds opened to learn from what is going on there.

Gosh, that's awful! Those poor people won't be able to earn a living...wait a minute, there's fine print...

President Nicolas Maduro announced that millions of officials will now work only Monday and Tuesday.

Officials? What officials?

People working for the state, the country's largest employer, will be paid for the days they're sent home. Some have been using their Fridays off to wait in lines to buy groceries and other goods. Others have been going home to watch TV and run the air conditioning, leading critics to say the furlough is not an effective energy-saving measure.

Pretty sweet deal if you can manage it. Two days' work for a week's pay and you get to enjoy resources the working class can't even aspire to. If ever there were a perfect description of socialism in action, this is it.

So, to improve the economy, the government limits productivity and man-hours.

Collectivism sure is interesting to watch.

VZ was fairly rich by Latin American standards. I vacationed there six months before Hugo took power and saw VZ at its height. I saw the usual disparity between the rich and poor, but the country did not seem nearly so impoverished like so many others that I have visited. Caracas was a vibrant place! Merida was very nice. People everywhere were very hospitable toward us. It is a different environment now. The communists drove VZ into the ground and I hope the populace eventually hang them for it.

Let’s require all university professors to take a one year sabbatical in Venezuela.

this is our govt employees dream.....not to have to work except still get paid...

why do you think some school districts go to 4 day weeks?.....its pushed by the unions so our poor over worked teachers can have 3 day weekends to go with their 10 week summer vacations, Christmas break, Thanksgiving break, spring break and break-breaks...
