Why did so many have to die?

You do realize that a bit north of there at that time the Europeans were in the process of killing each other at the rate of 10,000 men per day, do you not?

You LIKE the idea of Turkish muslims slaughtering over a million Armenian Christians, raping little boys, crucifying rows of little girls on crosses, torturing and beheading the heads of the Armenian Orthodex Church ?

The secular Turkey created by Kemal Ataturk is rapidly reverting to the supremacist Islamic state of affairs under the Ottoman Empire.

Expect Turkish intransigence against the West to accelerate & expand under their new Sultan Erdogan.

The Armenian Genocide will have to go on being commemorated anywhere in the world but in the place where it happened. Yes, European men were slaughtering each other at a fearful rate in 1915. But the Armenian horror inflicted by the Turks seemed mostly directed at females especially young ones.

Islam is the same no matter where it is applied, is it not?
