Corruption and buying off politicians has always existed. It’s the level of such that has increased. It’s also a wave of apathy or futility on the part of sitting members who know better.
Many voted for the CROmnibus because to not do so would cause the United States to default and that in turn would bring calamity. The question is why they didn’t raise their voices or show the public the danger. Why did they remain mostly silent?
Looking at a chart of US Debt from 2008 to 2016, the line rockets up as untold amounts of debt are added, so much so that it will top 20 trillion this year and Trump projects 24 Trillion when he takes office. This rocketing up of debt is the Federal Reserve propping up the federal government, indirectly in shell game fashion.
Why the erstwhile patriotic members of Congress are keeping silent I would guess has to do with the reality that the campaign funds needed for their election have slowed to a trickle from voters (who are in general strapped for cash) whereas the funds from lobbyists (K Street via Wall St/The Fed, and foreigners) are readily available as long as the member is deemed to be in good standing (willing to perform as expected).
In sum, lobbyists derive funds from the eddy flows of Federal Reserve funds to banks such as hedge funds involved in carry trade and such, and also from foreign donors who now that Citizen’s United allows secret unlimited donations are able to step in unimpeded to buy policy.
In short, the Federal Reserve and foreign interests have captured Congress.
