I got a phone call from my old friend “Jane” this week. Jane and I went to high school together. We’ve kept in touch over the years as our lives took radically different directions. She became a city mouse: got married, moved to Seattle and became very involved in the sustainable movement. I became a country mouse: got married, moved to a small farm in Idaho and helped start a woodcraft business. Jane’s burning ambition is to get me to live as sustainable a life as she does. She can’t understand why I don’t embrace her vastly superior green lifestyle.

If living in the city were so green, it would be cheaper. Many of the costs in the city are a result of higher energy consumption.
After reading the entire piece, Partice’s friend in downtown seattle made me feel just so, so guilty that I decided to let the hemi idle for an extra 10 minutes. :>) Just doin’ my part to try to stave off another ice age.
We live in the sticks. Have been composting for the past
30 yrs.; so the soil in the garden is top notch. We eat
leftovers, even give some to the dog. Husband used to
weedeat the sides of our long driveway; finally quit that
when I told him I wanted it to look natural instead of
manicured. We use little electricity. Have more modern
energy saving appliances now. I was raised on dried beans
& potatoes; so am not picky. We don’t travel as much as we
used to; it cramps up my joints. Husband gardens a little
(organic). This is as green as I can manage. :o)
Oh yeah. I forgot the wood stove, (we cut our own from the
place). Also, the big trees around the house keep it cooler
in summer. Can’t stand it too hot or too cold either.
You’re making me feel as guilty as all get out.

LOL! No doubt the “true” greenies would look down on you. You’re not spending nearly as much as you ‘should’ to help save the erf.
My siblings both moved to Seattle, after college. My brother is not so bad, but my sister went off the deep end. One boondoggle comes to mind. When they built a deck in their small, sloped back yard, they used some “sustainable” kind of crap material, instead of wood. Wouldn’t want to chop down a tree, a new one might be forced to grow back, in its place ! The backyard wasn’t very child friendly, but the deck provided a stable platform of several square feet, where her young boys could play, outdoors, relatively unsupervised.
OOPS ! Turns out the wasps LOVE the sustainable material, and soon the boys were forced back indoors. Several environmentally friendly solutions did not solve the problem, so the deck got torn down, replaced by . . .wood.
The contractor wasn’t too sad, however, as he pocketed an additional 10 grand ;)
oh, like my sister who spent about $5000 to build a chicken coop to house 16 chickens. That she’ll harvest for eggs only no slaughtering them for dinner.
ROI is about 10 years including initial costs and ongoing maintenance.
Next up for her is a $25,000 solar system with an ROI of 30 years.
I think we all knew where this was going about half way through the first sentence. The undeniable fact is that the vast majority of eco oriented liberals crowd themselves into congested urban areas from which they meet, engage in "activism" and plot on how they can tell the rest of us how to live.
It's not relegated to resources, it is the bone deep difference between conservative and liberal ideology.
While conservatives work to preserve freedom and urge people towards independence and self determination, liberals are exactly the opposite.
I celebrated by spraying a mix of glysophate, mechamine, and spreader sticker in a 4% solution and then spread 48-Barricade around liberally - 5-7 lbs per 1000 sq ft.

Cities have the highest energy consumption, and carbon footprints, but obviously this is in large measure because that’s where the most population is. That said, I’m very happy people live in cities, because this allows me to find a place away from the city where there are open spaces and peace. I grew up in the city, but now would just love to get away/stay away from all of that.

Well they’re doing gaia’s work. LOL! I’ve got enough clear space on the south side of the house to put up a pretty decent sized solar set up but after looking at the cost and ROI, we’ll just keep paying NVenergy to send us some juice. They keep reminding me that I use more than others with similar sized houses. Helping delay the next ice age works for me.
I was gonna spray but the forecasters are saying wetness is likely for most of the week so I’ll have to hold off.
It was obvious when it got to “a friend who moved to seattle”. That pretty much sealed the deal. Sanctimonious lot aren’t they. Sadly a lot of moronialls have bought in lock, stock and barrel.
The next ice age means even more energy would be needed! The greenies should embrace the status quo. Seattle is the worst town to experience the climate. My daughter lived there for 6 years. They only had some baseboard heat and usually kept the temp about 60. In summer, they can open windows without screens and do not worry about bugs or flies. There aren’t any. And, there is no need of air conditioning. So, this gives a false sense to the enviros of what life is like for the rest of us. It ain’t even close to Missouri life.
Actually, that’s not quite true. Cities, with people crammed into small apartments in big apartment buildings and few owning cars, tend to be lower energy consumers per capita than more sprawling environments.
But this woman’s “friend” couldn’t be more obnoxious and I can’t imagine suggesting she come for a visit. (Having a friend living so close to the land also must have raised her competitive hackles incredibly.) But I certainly know plenty of low- to high-income people whose religion has become the expatiation of this kind of guilt with massive “sustainable” rituals.
Conservation is a worthy goal. If people ask you for advice, be sure to let them know what works best for you. However, if you feel the need to expound upon your practices and belittle your friends and loved ones who don’t recognize your superior wisdom, well, now, you’re just being an asshat.
It's a beautiful warm day here in south central Louisiana, so to do my part to combat global warming, I'm going to drop the top on my Jeep and drive around with my A/C on full blast.
