One of the things I find fascinating is that these dogs have been very carefully bred to lie. They will present as playing, wagging their tail, front legs on ground, and then go straight into an attack - with no warning. They will also do this to dogs showing submission. It is highly desired trait in dogfighting. Lot of money in dogfighting.
More info here if you want.

Pit bull safety: 7 attack triggers

It’s no secret that dogs can bite. It also shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that pit bull attacks tend to be the most severe of all. The ongoing study of serious and fatal dog attacks conducted by the animal people organization since 1982 indicates that pit bulls, at around 5% of the dog population in the USA, account for more fatal and disfiguring attacks on humans than the other 95% of dogs combined. Several medical studies have shown that the most severe dog bite trauma seen by ER doctors is nearly always inflicted by pit bulls. A 1986 dog attack study showed that pit bulls are 600% more likely to attack their owner than other dogs - and the pit bull attack statistics have been worsening in recent years.

I won’t take a side in the debate about who is responsible - bad dogs or bad owners - for the growing number of pit bull victims. That’s a topic that has been debated elsewhere and will continue to be debated for the foreseeable future. What I would like to do is help bolster public safety by raising awareness of the sorts of things that can trigger a pit bull attack. A little knowledge can help avoid these scenarios, and make one less likely to suffer a pit bull attack.

Fortunately for this victim the pit bull that attacked her was only 4 months old

Here are 7 deadly triggers to avoid:

1. Attempting to discipline your pit bull. Really.
2. Attempting to intervene when your pit bull attacks another dog.
3. Slipping and falling on the ice while walking your pit bull. Really.
4. Being trapped under a car that falls on you while you’re working on it.
5. Handing out peaches to passing children.
6. Going out to feed the horses.
7. Taking a walk on a Sunday afternoon.

This list of 7 triggers is fairly representative, but by no means complete. For a more comprehensive treatment, please consult this list of it bull attack triggers compiled by the fact checkers at dogsbite.org

Our cat positioned herself by his bedroom door and hissed and growled at the landlords when they tried to enter his room. She thought the baby was her baby.

That sounds like a great cat!

hard to believe a dog turns aggressive on being startled

Believe it. Seen it first hand many many times. Sudden sounds can initiate destructive violent dog aggression in those dogs with behavioral problems

I admit I would never trust a lab with a 3 day old baby, however.

They are fine if you are going to have pit bull fights-otherwise they should be outlawed

Easily explained...it’s like posting a comment about how people are way too wrapped up in their dogs to the exclusion of concern for humans and watch how the startled humans attack...over a statement of truth.

"Dog attacks, deaths and maimings, US & Canada - Merritt"

Sorry, but any argument citing Merritt Clifton and his so-called, "study," are specious at best. You may want to research the man and his methodology if you're going to cite him as a reference you expect others to take seriously.

It’s not the breed. It’s the STUPID owners/parents. They should be arrested for endangering the welfare of a child.

THREE DAYS old?????? and you let an animal within striking distance of your child?

This is moronic. I don’t care what “breed” of dog. I wouldn’t trust my Lhasa Apsos near a newborn baby.

Oh, and it wasn’t just the noise. I’ll bet being on the bed was the dog’s territory that the baby was invading. The dog would also be jealous of the newborn, seeing it as competition for the affections of it’s owners.

How DUMB are these people? Ignorant parents, ignorant pet owners.

It is one of several breeds commonly known as pit bulls.

I think there is a preponderance of apartment-dweller related pit bull atrocities because drug dealers often get pits for cred and protection, and drug dealers, for reasons I guess of mobility, don’t usually work/live out of homes.

I think you you’re discounting all the redneck, rural yahoos to at least somewhat balance that demo.

I agree totally that in affluent suburbia about the only pitbulls to be found are a couple of dogs in the local pound.

Here is a 3-minute youtube commentary on the situation. What this man has to say is quite thought provoking, and his suggestions seem both radical and reasonable.

This is “Mr. Bill” Donze, of McCook, Nebraska, Donze52 channel:

It calls for dog control.

As well as birth control, in the case of these dumbbells.
