A 3-day-old baby was fatally mauled by a pet dog in front of the child's parents at their Mira Mesa home Thursday night, San Diego police said Friday.

The parents were in bed, watching TV, with their newborn son and pit bull-mix dog when the mother coughed, startling the dog, child abuse unit Sgt. Tu Nguyen said.

The dog reacted by biting the baby, he said. The parents pulled the animal off and raced the child to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

I would not recommend a dog or cat unsupervised around infants and small children.

When my son was born, we invited our landlords to visit our new baby. Our cat positioned herself by his bedroom door and hissed and growled at the landlords when they tried to enter his room. She thought the baby was her baby.

My miniature dachshund showed her disapproval of my newborn son by pooping under his crib.

People that have this breed, especially around small children, are fools....as this proves and all the previous instances have proven.

The dog was already uneasy and ready to strike with new baby there in his face. The cough and the dog was on already high alert to engage strange new being. No adjustment time for dog and brainless self absorbed parents.

According to the article, the dog freaked out because of a cough??
Hmmmm..? I could be wrong but my gut feeling is that this dog was no angel. Or maybe the baby spooked him/her. Just so sad..

If you have a pit bull and a baby you are the definition of morally repugnant.

I cannot foresee any, I repeat ANY circumstance where this could happen with a properly raised lab.

I wonder if the parents are aggressive and passed that onto the dog. These dogs are used a lot in dogfights too so you never know.

They were bred to fight dogs. Seeing a creature close to the ground could easily trigger that fight instinct. Even if one assumes that a pitbull is no more likely to attack vs any other breed, one can safely say that when they do attack it is devastating and only ends with somdondthig dying.

Absolutely correct! The dog should never have been allowed in the bed in the first place..with a new born. The bed should have been off limits. The owners failed to teach the dog its pack position. Consequently, dog saw the strange baby as a threat to the pack. This was human error. As a result, not only is the baby dead, but it will also cost the dog his life as well.

Secondly, what was the other portion of the mix, and how much? Chow maybe? Some other human aggressive breed?

I’ve never seen a good dog come out of an AmStaff mix. The introduction of another breed brings out the worst of the other breed and dulls the natural instincts of the AmStaff.

My son has a mix. She’s a nasty dog. She has a very nasty temperment. I have a full AmStaff with a very good temperment/disposition. I expect to breed her. I wouldnt give you a nickle for a mix, not for my son’s dog, nor for any of the others I’ve met along the way.

I see a lot of people who have no business owning dogs of any kind. Not because the aren’t good caring people, but because they don’t know and understand dogs or how to make them into good and trusting, safe, faithful companions. My best friend is one of those people. His little dog is vicious with him, and has no respect for him or his property. I will not allow that kind of behavior so when she is in my care, she becomes a well behaved angel. She will viciously bite him in the face if he has a plate of food, she wants it, and he won’t give it to her.

She know better than to even look in my direction when I eat. She distances herself and doesn’t stare. That’s respect. “I” I am leader of the pack, not the dog. Its not a natural GOd given role for a dog to rule over a human. It makes them hysterical nervous wrecks when its allowed, they are untrustworthy, and miserable to care for. That is why the dog bit the baby.

Pits aren’t vicious unless they have a nitwit for an owner, and 100% of the time, stupid owners have been at the heart of attacks. Failure to socialize is exactly right.

I didn’t really mean that. Just so unnecessary a death. A terrible price to pay for absent mindedness.

RIP, dearest little baby.

Some pitbulls are problematic, some aren’t like most dogs. We wouldn’t have one but I have had friends who haven’t had problems. One question I have about this is did they prepare the dog for the baby? Now they have lists of how to prepare your pet for your newborn - we did a bunch of things to help our cat adjust when we brought out baby home last fall. Things like marking the baby’s socks by rubbing them on the cat so the baby ‘smells’ right. Starting to use baby lotion and powder before the baby is born so the animal is used to the smell. Keeping the animal away from the baby for the first few weeks whenever possible (the dog should not have been in the bedroom), playing audio of crying babies before the baby is born, again so the animal gets used to it. I have other friends with dogs and they prepared the dogs and there haven’t been issues.

I do feel for the parents, this is something their marriage may not survive.
