Uh oh: Has Cruz been Trumped in trying to win over Pennsylvania’s delegates?
HotAir.com ^ | 04/21/2016 | ALLAHPUNDIT

Big news from American Commitment President Phil Kerpen, who’s been hard at work trying to figure out which way Pennsylvania’s delegate candidates are leaning. Why is that important? It’s not just that Pennsylvania will send 71, a large haul, to the convention. It’s the fact that the state has a “loophole primary” where most of those 71 are unbound on the first ballot. Seventeen delegates will be awarded to the winner of the primary next week but the remaining 54 will be determined by elections held the same day — and to make things extra confusing, the ballot won’t show which presidential candidate each would-be delegate is supporting for nominee. If you’re looking to vote for delegates who back Trump, you’d better have done your homework before you go into the booth. ------------------------

How did Team Cruz fall down on the job here? Kerpen points to the fact that delegates had to announce their candidacy months ago, before February 16th, in order to land on next week’s ballot and Cruz’s operation may simply not have been planning for a delegate battle at the time. Remember, Cruz’s strategy initially was to beat Trump across the evangelical south and then settle into a long war with Marco Rubio, who looked to be the emerging establishment champion.

“It’s a myth .. he was well funded by establishment players from the start”

A stone cold fact. The mythical ground game always consisted of equal parts social media spammers and establishment muscle.

I got a robot call from a so called “unaffiliated” PAC tonight telling me which delegates I should vote for in my district for the Republican party...I looked them up and they were Cruz or original Rubio delegates...then I got an email from Cruz asking for money, then two more robot calls from Cruz telling me to attend his rallies tomorrow.

Same thing happened to me today. Got a robo call from a Columbus Ohio cell phone. Yep. The message was to vote for three delegates (all cruz) to defeat Hillary. Your average voter is going to shake their head.

Well, with Trump daily demonstrating that he is in no way a conservative Republican, we can hope that the delegates in PA will realize this and support an actual conservative, Ted Cruz!

Here is a message from Pennsylvania. TAFT!

You, inadvertently, gave me a new name for Cruz, by your mistyping.

From now on, I will call him “Toad” Cruz. We all love “lying Toads”, right?

He’ll have plenty of time on his hands to learn very soon.

When he loses his Senate seat in 2018, he can start a private practice back home in Calgary.

Much will become pretty irrelevant as Trump continues to amass win after win next week (just look at the impact NY has had on his momentum) and as his new team works multiple angles, including the Rubio cache of delegates and the Kasich option. The train is not only rolling, but accelerating!

And the #Cruxsexscandal has NOT gone away, and more revelations will be forthcoming that will expose Cruz’s hypocrisy. And there is some very intriguing evidence circulating about his birth status, which will explode once it is confirmed.

Teddy, you can’t be president no matter what your crazy daddy promised! Especially not when you’ve been a terrible Senator a liar.

Bump!

On top of that, 58 candidates say they’ll support whoever wins the popular vote in their district

Those... those MONSTERS!!! ;)

There goes the “ground game” king...

For all the talk about a ground game, the bottom line is that when it starts to look like one candidate may have some campaign jobs to hire people for, jobs that may very well turn into full-time government positions later if he wins the general, his ground game suddenly improves dramatically.

When it starts to look like a few more votes will push Trump over the top everybody is going to suddenly become his best friend.

I know people here will respond "But them's the rules" but I think it ludicrous that a state - any state - should have a primary that is deliberately confusing for the voters. That is, you can check off the presidential candidate of your choice but that vote is meaningless unless you also select the corresponding delegate pledged to support that candidate. And because the ballot will not list the presidential candidate that a delegate candidate is pledged to, you have to do some detective work before even getting to the booth.

The reason for the convoluted process can only be so that the party establishment can confuse the "rank and file" and thus have better control over what candidate their state delegation will support at the convention.

It's very dishonest.

Not at all. You're absolutely right. This seems to be much more prevalent in Northern states. It's a deliberate effort to confuse voters and cloud the selection process, to the benefit of insiders...

They weren’t “voterless.” People voted for the delegates at caucuses.

Here is the latest on Colorado:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3423494/posts

Republican Primary Voters Prefer Donald Trump Over Ted Cruz

If a Republican Presidential Primary Election were to take place in Colorado, 44% of likely voters would vote for Donald Trump, 34% support Ted Cruz, 17% support John Kasich and 5% are undecided. When asked to choose between only Ted Cruz or Donald Trump, 48% support Trump and 42% support Cruz, and 10% are undecided. These results are interesting in light of the results at the Republican State Convention where Ted Cruz won all 34 delegates awarded. What the results show is a potential disconnect between the more dedicated group of delegates who participated in the state convention and the far broader group of 350,000 to 400,000 Republicans who would typically vote in a primary election.

But there was no vote and Cruz poached delegates that do not reflect the will of Colorado voters.

Giving him 50 from PA would leave him 51 short. That’s including half the unbound 54 delegates, which might be generous. NM only has 24 delegates and they are apparently proportional. So that won’t get him to the magic number.

Knowing how Cruz underpolls, looks like he would’ve won Colorado even in a primary.
