Yeah, not really in the camp that views Prince as a great guitarist, though he was definitely good. But, he was that rare combination of songwriter/musician who was above average at both, plus he was a good live performer. Had most of his albums from Controversy through Sign o' the Times. I know Purple Rain sold a ton, but the closest any of the albums from that run came to be being great from start to finish was Sign o' the Times. He always had a few clunkers on his albums, though, mostly forgettable funk workouts or horny ballads. But, at his creative best, he was certainly among the best songwriters from that era. No idea about his work after he became symbol man, though.
