Arby in Colorado tried this in 1993 with the Touch 2000 system (helped build it). It didn’t work out too well. Society has too many people that simply cannot use a computer system, plus there are just too many questions people need to ask about the menu and the computer doesn’t do that.

Also, at the Denver airport, same thing: Put the kiosks in, took them out.

Things have radically changed since 1993. Most people are now comfortable using automated systems - ATMS, self-checkout, their own smartphones, online banking...

I have seen younger couples walk into a restaurant and goggle at the laminated menus because they were used to either overhead menus or at-table touchscreen systems.

A lot can happen in 13 years.

The kiosks are so popular at the Atlanta airport that it is now sometimes faster to go to the staffed counter.
