WASHINGTON, April 21 (Reuters) - - The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week, hitting its lowest level since 1973, suggesting the labor market continued to gain momentum despite weak economic growth.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits declined 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 247,000 for the week ended April 16, the lowest reading since November 1973, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Claims for the prior week were unrevised.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims rising to 263,000 in the latest week. Jobless claims have now been below 300,000, a threshold associated with healthy labor market conditions, for 59 weeks, the longest stretch since 1973.
The labor market is strengthening despite signs that economic growth braked sharply in the first quarter. But labor market strength, against the backdrop of weak growth and benign inflation, is probably insufficient for the Federal Reserve to move away from its policy of gradually raising interest rates.

Does anyone, anywhere, still believe these blatant lies?
Pure lies and indoctrination.
The economy SUCKED in 1973. Everything seemed to be going to hell in 1973. Bad year to use as an index.
It’s up by one, as of today.
In a hospital, 100 patients were dying each week. One day, there were no more deaths at that hospital. ‘Happy Days are here again, they are cured!’, shouted the doctors as their singing echoed in the empty halls.
Intel announced layoffs of 11,000.
OZero just makes up the numbers and the sheep believe him.
The economy is in SHAMBLES. No net new jobs since 2007. Inflation is raging. The REAL unemployment rate is nearly 30%.
That’s either the funniest punchline I’ve ever read, or really, really scary.
What a joke.

They are manipulating the numbers more than ever to make Obama look good on his way out.
If an R becomes the next president, within months they will be showing how bad the economy is and getting worse.
Those numbers are more political than real. A.K.A., turd polishing.
How can a labor market “gain momentum” with weak economic growth?
And the labor force participation rate is....
Would you like fries with that?
“The economy SUCKED in 1973.”
Exactly.
90 million not working.
50 million on food stamps.
40 million government workers.
Unsustainable.
No.
How can a labor market gain momentum with weak economic growth?
Partially because of the type of jobs being created. At some point, a recession is coming. I can’t predict when, but we are do.
When it comes, it’ll follow one of the weakest recoveries since the last one. And the Federal Reserve is out of ideas.
Figures lie and liars figure. As much as it pains me to say it, jobs are going begging (right to work Upstate SC)in some regions while other regions really have not recovered from the recessions of the 1980's and 1990's. I guess the key factor is your labor pool willing to work for $10.00 per hour.
