This was the part of the Cruz plan that didn’t make sense to me.
If Trump did come up 100 delegates shy, wouldn’t be a heck of a lot easier for him to get that hundred, than for ted to get 300-400?

(Hey Ted, why are you taking one for the RNC/GOPe team, and not ours? Not that we don't know.)

No, because every one of the delegates at the convention secretly adores Cruz.

I think cruz is delusional about his own appeal as an alternative to Trump
Does he really think trump people would change their votes on the 2d or 3d ballot to pick a voteless weasel?

Ted will need closer to six hundred from what I’ve seen.
The idea that he’ll secure all his own plus that many new ones is fatuous.

(One time Cruz supporter who now prefers Trump. Yes, there are good reasons.)

I think much of what we've seen and attributed to the Cruz campaign, is actually GOPe forces running on autopilot. Cruz is the beneficiary, and I assume there is communications between "local grassroots activists" (the small time party hacks) and the Cruz campaign, but the #NeverTrump sentiment is widespread and needs what it feels is a productive outlet.
The local grassroots activists aren't likely to be looking at the big picture, and "every delegate counts."
