The rank and file elect their local leaders who in turn elect county leaders, who elect state leaders, who elect national leaders. The nepotistic oligarchy exists only because the rank and file permits it.

All politics is local!!!

They always have and they still do.
All politics is local!!!
Only the useless stuff is local.
The really important stuff is determined on much, much higher levels.

But it’s not ordinary Republican voters who elect these people. It’s people who are active in the local party. So maybe you can fault people for not getting more involved.

Yes, but . . .

Every couple of years we hear the political scientists and the bigwigs of the GOPe lament how so many people stay home on election day. Now you have a guy who energizes a large number of those people (Bernie, too, on the other side). In both cases, (more so Bernie) the party elites are trying to screw them. Nothing new about that.

What is important, though, is the elites can’t have it both ways. They can’t want more participation, more “broadening of the party” and then turn around and smack down the very voters who think they are actually getting involved in something.

The Cruz Hobbit Tricksies are precisely who so many people are disgusted with politics, think they have no voice, and stay home.
